Maybe it's on me since I at first thought the series was like Planet Earth but for food, given how the first episode was shot and directed. But the second episode (Water) abandoned the "this is how different people cook using this method" and went whole hog into "fast food is bad, industrial production is bad, slow cooking is awesome, ....oh and water can be used for cooking."

I even agree with most of his points but get back to the food porn.

Maybe I'll start up the other two before Daredevil comes back later this week.

If it wasn't for the amazing Punisher scenes in the first two episodes I would have probably not continued watching season 2. The side-actors (as in, not the main characters) are incredibly loving terrible in those episodes. I'm glad I stuck with it because 3 on are pretty legit and the side actors decided to actually try acting (except the DA lady she is continually horrible).

Jon Bernthal is loving perfect as Frank Castle, though.

I liked Jessica Jones. It's a character study, which you don't get much of from the marvel media factory. It's about how bad judgment follows from subjective experience.

Is Daredevil better than Jessica Jones? I found JJ to be possibly good at times, but mostly 5 episodes too long, lovely side characters, and many missed opportunities (for example the hospital scene towards the end of season). So given the praise that tricked me into watching JJ, I am a little hesitant about the praise given to Daredevil. I have the tendency to judge television harsher than movies (for example I feel like House of Cards has been poo poo since the start of season 2). Still I am tempted to give Daredevil a spin. Is there really that much of difference between JJ and DD?

I enjoyed the first season of Daredevil (haven't started the second yet) and couldn't stand Jessica Jones for more than three episodes. I thought the dialog was super clunky and was put off by story inconsistencies (Jessica's powers only ever seem to come in to play at super convenient times).

The writing in Daredevil isn't perfect, but it's on a better level overall than JJ. The characters are more likable, the story moves pretty well (aside from some of the ninja stuff) and they've got a unique take on their villain. It's also just a pretty show to look at and has some surprisingly strong fight choreography.

jessica jones is pretty rough but it tries a lot of interesting stuff, so I find myself less inclined to call it outright bad, it just features some wonky dialogue and some really bad acting at points

but daredevil is sort of the opposite case, it's basically Batman: Blind Dude edition with a bit more of an edge, but it's less interesting thematically and more just features good actors doing their poo poo well and some cool action scenes and some pretty solid dialogue

I do get the occasional movie or show where it says I'll rate it 2 or 3 stars but it looks like my kind of thing so I watch it and I'm feeling more like 4 stars. I think that happens when there's that one movie that's not "tied" to any other movie, or else nobody's heard of or watched it so there's no basis for comparison to the rest of the catalog. Or it's new and never been on Netflix before. Or... it's divisive and people either love or hate it so they put your predicted rating right in the center.

Also everybody should get a Criticker account if they really want accurate predictions for stuff they'd like.

Finally quit dragging my feet on Charlie Countryman and it was really pretty excellent. I had no idea what to expect (for some reason the title made me figure it was some kind of IRA-era piece of something,) and I was super stoked to see one of my favorite actors, Mads Mikkelson, in it. A really fun movie, great music, and Bucharest was a most excellent setting.

Also the guy who played Darko reminds me a whole lot of Michael Rooker. One scary motherfucker.

Either you or I must be horribad at math, because I'm pretty sure I was watching episode 11 of DD last night, and then 12.

Casting the dude who was Shane in TWD was a great choice for Punisher, he looks good in bruises. Lots of bruises. All the time, beaten to a pulp.. And the Punisher in prison scene was just as satisfying as it was from the comics.

And frankly even though the ninjas are kinda silly, Vincent Dinofrio as Kingpin was inspired, and the ninja guys are way, way less obnoxious than the League of Assassins poo poo from Arrow.

Just watched Room 237 on Netflix and it was a pretty eye-opening experience and a must-see if you're a Kubrick fan. A lot of the theories seemed to hold a lot of weight, in particular the labyrinth/Minotaur allegory and the Native American/Nazi genocidal imagery, but I have to say a lot of the theories seemed pretty disjointed when compared to each other and I was rolling my eyes pretty hard when they devoted a not insignificant portion of the documentary to explaining how the moon landing was definitely faked. I guess that's an occupational hazard when you're giving symbologists and conspiracy theorists a box to preach on, but I did really enjoy the idea that Kubrick was using his genius to "shine" the tragedy of the human condition into our brains through the use of horror and subliminal imagery.

One more complaint: there was sort of an off-hand comment made during the beginning that suggested Danny Torrance was using his abilities to deteriorate his father mentally and compel him toward his own death, and I wish they spent more time on that thread because that was definitely an intriguing interpretation

The fight scene when the punisher is in prison is brutal and really well done. I hope whoever is making those fight sequences gets a lot more work in the future.

I don't even remember which one Oliver's ex-girlfriends who also happen to be trained assassin ninjas Nyssa was, but there were about 5 different characters all vying for "annoying as Elektra" whereas in DD, there's just Elektra, and has a specific arc which will eventually force her to not be in most episodes, from what I recall of the source.. I wasn't a huge huge DD fan as a kid but I definitely remember reading the arc where Punisher goes to prison because it was super-memorable (and they really carried that scene off excellently in the show imho), and Elektra always seemed more of a side character who was destined to be in other books, not necessarily a constant addition to DD. Most of the women supporting cast in Arrow also seem to have absolutely terrible hero/villain names, too.

I was so stoked when Frank went into the murder-shed and then it shows the armor, and the pads already were shaped like his skull emblem, before they even got painted.
