Yeah when I first heard that parable I was pretty sure it was bogus email forwarding nonsense if only because native american religions don't really emphasize faith the way christians do, and i'm pretty sure they didn't come up with the concept of ego thousands of years before Freud either :v:

This version by "Carlylean" is just loving hilarious. I won't be surprised if it is by Curtis himself, but even if not, it's really weird to think this is a fan whose contribs are entirely about Yarvin, going as far as adding him as an alumnus to his high school's article. The username is a big clue in itself, I think.

Also, the categories, "21st-century philosophers", "American male poets".

Those tweets mention LambdaConf but there hasn't been any summary of that particular shlamarkey ITT, so I will summarize for people who aren't up for reading poo poo on Reddit.

Remember when Yarvin was uninvited from a cool* programming conference called Strangeloop once the organizers realized he was literally pro-slavery? Well, the roughly-similar upcoming conference LambdaConf accepted his proposal for a talk. At first it was just like Strangeloop: they posted their schedule, people recognized Yarvin, pointed out the trouble to them, and then they apparently had a huge angst-party, and in the end kept him in the program , because...I don't really know! They wanted to have a ~policy~ instead of just, uhh, a decision, and they don't think their having him on the schedule is an endorsement of his views, but they want everyone who isn't literally a violent criminal to be welcome at their shindig, because...I really, really don't know! Nerds!

quote:

Based on this new LambdaConf policy, any speaker’s political views would not, by themselves, disqualify the speaker from attending LambdaConf.

However, we must still consider the safety and trust exceptions.

To address the safety issue, we read or skimmed nearly everything the speaker has written online (which is no small task), watched all videos we could find, and spent countless hours on Google doing background research. We ignored second-hand sources, which seemed largely based on other second-hand sources or on the writings of those quoting the speaker.

To summarize, we could not find any evidence whatsoever that the speaker poses a physical threat to anyone at the conference. In addition, we could not find any evidence the speaker would engage in verbal abuse.

However, we decided this was not enough. Social media has muddled this issue so much, we decided it was imperative to do more, so we wrote the speaker and asked for a public statement clearly stating the speaker’s views on violence.

This is the statement we obtained:

quote:

One: I’m a writer, not an activist. I’m neither a leader nor a member of any kind of organization. I promote only one kind of action: reading old books. I’ve explicitly denounced any other form of “direct action,” violent or otherwise. Instead I promote passive unresistance, or “passivism.” Frankly, any “follower” who needs me to explain this is a dangerous fool and hasn’t read enough old books.

Two: Politics of any sort is out of scope at a functional programming conference. I pledge to treat other LambdaConf guests as if they were colleagues at a large company or fellow students at a university, and neither utter nor show any content that’s out of scope or otherwise disturbing. My pen name has been “doxed,” but professionally I behave as if it was a secret.

Three: violence is unacceptable and frankly preposterous at a functional programming conference, even over an issue as charged as strict versus lazy evaluation. The strongest possible pledge is to not respond with verbal or physical violence even if assaulted myself. I have no hesitation in making this pledge.

I've heard second-hand that some people are already distancing themselves from the conference. I'm glad I didn't get a ticket.

*: i went and really liked it; kathy sierra couldn't make it but there were many cool talks and they rented out The City Museum one night, a+

Yes. It refers to situations where people are so focused on taking care of others that they don't take care of themselves. The platonic ideal of pathological altruism is burnout in healthcare/mental health professions. But it can also refer to e.g. people staying in unhealthy/abusive relationships because their partner "needs their help."

The entire gimmick of Undertale, other than the wacky Homestuckiness and poo poo, is that it makes a common game trope (random monsters who you kill just because it's the way it is) into an axis of moral choice. Obviously in order to make this point it creates an environment where you are never/almost never in a place where we might consider killing in self defense to be morally laudable, and the game itself even has a character that remarks "there's a lot of bad people out there. You can't always hug it out."

This is independent of any fandom meta-commentary, though of course the creative pivot on monster-squashing in RPGs is indeed a commentary.

I like how his idea of the culture of SA is basically "it's remained completely unchanged since 2005 and therefore it must literally just be 4chan but communist"

Also his equating of 4chan's "cute boys / traps" boards vs actual transpeople thing is triggering me so hard right now because the whole "trap" thing is super toxic to actual transpeople and oh my god he's making me critically analyze anime porn types now gently caress you so much

The sexualization of trans people on 4chan can be simmed up like so.

I think women are impure
I think men are more pure.
Therefore men who become women are inherently pure and have innately the qualities I desire in a person
These desires also sum up as not changing a thing about who I am and what I do and think.

Then there's those who are younger boomer lites with a persecution complex of not being born earlier who put the classic "mental illness" and other vile crap. Wanting to give people the body thay fits their braincase of who they are like any other medical operation? Not on my christian dollars.

Manga/Anims lgbt isn't actually same sex promotion, it's sex appeal for the japanese male audience.

Plus I don't even want to get into how Japan for a long time considered lgbt relationships to be a phase and half of its citizens only recently are okay with same sex marriage and other legal benefits. Still hasn't made gay marriage legal yet. On the plus side though sex change is legal can serve in military.
