Yep. It's like when people say Chicago they really mean like 2 neighboorhoods, and like maybe a 5 block radius.

I'm kind of excited for Hilldawg. Not totally amped like I was for Obama in 08 but I voted for her over Bernie because I think she'll be better at the job than he would be. Basically what I'm looking for is someone who will not suffer republican fools and I think she'll be starting out pretty close to the zero-fucks-to-give level Obama finally reached after too many wasted years. Also someone to appoint liberal judges.

I would at least be positive of Hillary if the positions she took from Bernie were not compromised. She's not fighting for $15 minimum, she's looking to create a sliding scale where cities pay $15 and surrounding areas pay less. She'll think about making medical marijuana legal, but won't repeal prohibition entirely.

Even if congress won't let her, it's important to set a strong tone so that if you had to negotiate, you won't be caught in an even weaker position. Obama did that with the PPACA, starting from a compromised position thinking it would just be accepted, but it was not and ended up even weaker than he wanted.

There's absolutely no reason for her to compromise on anything fiscally liberal, but she's still doing it and it's just baffling.

I am super looking forward to President Hillary "Gives Zero Fucks About Republicans" Clinton. The bigger the stomping she gives to Trump, the more hard rear end she can be against the GOP from the get go.

I hope she has some sort of "The American people have made their voice heard, and they have rejected your party." line in her acceptance speech.

Trump being able to act like he got the NRA to let a gun bill pass would actually give support to his deal maker persona in a powerful way. Still not likely to happen.

When I moved from NC to NYC I was (naively) surprised at just how much racism there is up here. It's just a different flavor. I've found the old cliche to be broadly true - in the South it's "I don't care how close they get as long as they don't get too high," and in the North it's "I don't care how high they get as long as they don't get too close."

NI MUERTE NI MIEDO
How Leaving America Changes What People Think About Guns

quote:

There are few examples that ring truer than America's obsession with guns. While the US leads the world in mass shootings, with 372 in 2015 alone, there has only been one mass shooting in Switzerland in the last 15 years. The Swiss rank fourth in the world in guns per capita—behind the US, Yemen, and Syria—but the ownership is rooted in a sense of safety and responsibility.

"I went to Guam on vacation once, and I saw many gun-shooting shops or parlors—not even sure what they are called—and it seemed like Japanese people might actually find shooting sort of fun," she told VICE. "On further thought, I realized that guns probably aren't scary here in Japan in the same way as they are in the US to civilians, or at least to some civilians, because there is so little threat that one civilian will shoot another."

"Lately, I've realized that one thing that would make me nervous about repatriating to the US—especially now that I have a child—is how reasonable Japanese society seems to be to be about guns and how scary the US seems in comparison," she said. "I never thought I'd think something like this. But lately, I'm starting to wonder if the place where I feel most safe and at home in my heart—Boston and the US—is actually the place where I would be most safe. That makes me sad."

...

Ryan Greiss, expat living in Israel

Ryan Greiss served as a foreign volunteer (called a "lone soldier") in the Israel Defense Forces, which allowed him to carry a gun in plain clothes when off-duty. Even though guns appear to be virtually everywhere in Israel—people take them to the grocery store, to weddings, to the beach—Greiss said their ubiquity is misleading.

There is no clear right to bear arms under Israeli law. The country restricts gun licenses to people holding certain positions, such as designated ministry employees, authorized community leaders, and licensed guards and escorts. Obtaining a gun license for private use requires proof of a justified reason, according to Greiss.

What a cogent argument

Perhaps businesses in urban areas can adjust to cost increases quicker and more flexibly than less-trafficked rural businesses

I don't know what the better policy is. I don't know what's so special about $15 besides that it's divisible by 5 and humans like numbers divisible by 5.

I think probably a better policy would be to index it to CoL/FPL numbers and have it move based on relative economic performance but I'll leave that up to economists.
