Projecting what you want onto a candidate is literally just a thing that low information (and probably plenty of high information) voters do. Political campaigns rely on it. The numbers are really big, but getting a speaker with a lot of stuff after their name is a huge recruitment tool for people that make a lot of money, so the market has sort of scaled upward.
