Prime Factors. Harry's about to score with a hot alien babe on the euphoric orgasm planet. But at the last second he spergs about her transporter and has to tell the captain. Who he interrupts when she's about to bone this creepy French guy. Then they don't even get to keep the transporter. He could have totally scored with that girl and then dealt with the transporter, but nooooo. Great job Harry.

Hey, look. Look, if- if you screw me on this, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine, you rat bastard!
I was just thinking something about the fast time planet episode: If time was passing at a rate of about 1 day a second, and they knew this and had some rudimentary understanding of their language and were observable via telescope, why not try to use the ship's external lighting or something to flash an extremely rapid on-off signal code to them? Or would that have not worked?

If they rapidly had the lights strobe out a message over the course of a few seconds and kept repeating it, they might have been able to arrange some gradual conversation to the point of telling them what was going on.

That's the crazy thing, too. I really liked it, and it's sort of a plot that I think could have easily worked with the TOS or TNG crew, too.

TNG, though, probably would have spent about 1/2 the episode wringing their hands over the Prime Directive, and TOS probably would have had to have figured out a way to add some more action to it or something or more directly involve the main crew or have it unfold over a slower period of time (a year passing in an hour rather than 1 day a second) to get the main cast a way to get down to the surface for short periods to try to interact.

Part of the reason it's easy to imagine it as a TOS episode is that the Voyager episode is called Blink of an Eye and the TOS one is called Wink of an Eye.

As an aside, I worked in a video rental place for a while, back when they existed. One customer only ever rented porn and Voyager tapes. It wasn't the porn I looked down on him for.

They still exist, believe it or not. Detroit is littered with Family Videos that are somehow still open.

I saw an actual, functioning video store in Vegas before I moved away. It shocked me so much, I took photos. I probably still have them, somewhere.

I've seen them all around Ohio and Indiana. Back when renting videos was a thing they used to be great because it was like $3 for 5 days and if you owed a late fee you could still rent and just pay it next time. After you had bumped the payment like 5 times they'd make you pay something towards your late fee to rent again, but it only had to be at least a dollar.

I think I had a rolling $50 late fee at all times.

Back in like '07, I used to date a girl who went to Miami of Ohio and to get to her place I'd have to drive past the Family Video in Hamilton and Oxford. It seemed very fitting that those would be two places that still had video stores.

When I was a kid we didn't live near any rental stores and also my dad chose betamax, so once a movie was out of theaters that was it for hoping to see it.

I just checked Family Video's website and it's a terrible site, but I did learn that apparently they're the largest video rental store in the US.

They sort of remind me of the K-mart of video stores, because some have salons inside and some have small gyms inside, but the best ones have a Marco's Pizza inside so you can get a pizza delivered and have them being a movie with it. That would be nice if Marco's was any good and video delivery was at all necessary. I'm betting it's kept afloat by old people.

My local mom and pop video store had a tape called Star Trek Bloopers that promised an hour of laughs.

It was 3 minutes of DeForest Kelly walking into doors and the rest was clips from all these other shows from the 60s i had never heard of before. I was so disappointed that I remember this incident vividly.

Thank you for reading.

I think the answer to the great How Does Family Video Stay In Business Mystery is that they usually go for the cheapest crappiest out of the way storefronts in some otherwise-closed-down stripmall and that each of them also rents porno

Well George Takei has spoken out that he's against Sulu being gay.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/george-takei-reacts-gay-sulu-909154

The TL;DR of it is that he feels like Roddenberry put a lot of work into developing his characters and he never intended Sulu be anything but straight. He says he brought up gay rights at a pool party once but Gene explained that he was already toeing the line with controversy and if he toed it any further they'd take him off the air.

Go home and be a family man!
Im pretty sure I watched an episode of Enterprise where Shran's wife gets shot in the arm with a phaser. She goes to the doctor and she seems to be recovering pretty okay. Then later in the episode the doctor comes out and goes "gosh id like to help her but the phaser was set to Kill!"

She then dies.

Did the writers really think that a phaser being set to kill should literally mean "will kill someone if it touches them no matter what" rather than "just blasts through poo poo, as opposed to Stun which just kinda shocks your system"

Like, does the phaser beam contain disease that will finish the job if you didnt manage to get a kill shot?

What about the dude in DS9 that shot himself in the foot. He didnt die.

The phaser was a transporter/replicator that replaced her with a doppleganger, but the replicator technology still can't make a proper living person so that's why she died, the real one was transported away to be forced to work on a ship of mercenaries hunting romulan artifacts, sorry for spoiler

Enterprise is better than Voyager because while the plots are much more retarded (believe it or not), at least the acting is a slightly better approximation of how human beings behave

In TNG Data would have been sent down, influenced their entire culture and most of the episode would be a debate with Picard and Data on the correct way to proceed since the entire planet is dependent on Data now, ending in an impassioned speech from Picard. Geordi would learn how to speed up the ships sensors to translate data correctly and would just watch women showering that had long since turned to dust.

In TOS Kirk would have hosed the female astronauts they sent, then every time a new mission arrived with their descendants loving them too, before Scotty figured out how to make the ship hum and solve the problem, while Kirk wistfully remembers the nine generations of women he just hosed

I kind of always liked how a kill phaser/disruptor just melted away your physical being all at once on a direct hit. Kind of convenient and all but a nice effect.

The noPrize answer is that it generates nucleonic radiation that is deadly to living tissue. That glancing blow was like grabbing the core of a nuclear weapon at Los Alamos.
