I liked it a lot, I liked the contrast between a super armored Batman slowly and methodically pounding on a weakened Superman, punctuated by those moments of intense speed and brutality when Superman was back up to full power. Rurea posted:It would be better if they actually showed batman's fist armor like crumpling against superman's skin vis a vis the bullet into the eye thing from superman returns It loses a lot in the transition to mute gif, you don't have the sound of Batman's gauntlet smashing into Superman's steel face. Actually I thought his gauntlet did crumple when I originally watched it.

That proposal for Superman Returns 2 sounded dark as gently caress and exactly like something Bryan Singer would do, it would have been awesome. Singer has this talent for making really bald-faced genre schlock and then turning around and throwing in some totally inappropriate gut punch that I love.

Jimbot posted:I honestly think we should have gotten a Man of Steel sequel before BvS. That way they could have focused more on Batman and audiences would have already been familiar with why the world sees Superman the way they do after the events of the first film. I still think BvS worked but it was definitely a needlessly hard uphill battle to make work when they could have fleshed out Superman as a character in his own sequel film. The origin story is over, so let the character do his own thing. Agree totally. Plus this way you could call the new movie Man of ST33L.

Yeah, I should have realized how much less well the transition was sold without sound. The punches change from causing a fleshy hit to the sound of metal being struck, with the last one causing an extended ringing sound. You don't see the armor crumple, the visual side of it is Superman reacting less and less. But even if my GIF sucked, it's super clear what's going on in the movie.

Rurea posted:It would be better if they actually showed batman's fist armor like crumpling against superman's skin vis a vis the bullet into the eye thing from superman returns Nah, that sort of cavalier fixation on materials crumbling against Superman would be completely out of context in a scene explicitly reinforcing that Batman can kill Superman, as opposed to that a hench with a gun can't kill Superman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlyUAaa0qT4 What's missing from that gif and the others is that critical moment after Bruce has finished socking the tar out of Clark the first time, we get this very deliberate close up of Clark looking up at Bruce very desperately, but forcing himself to his knees. Even as Clark technically becomes more physically resilient to Bruce's attacks, the focus is persistently upon his needing to summon effort which is comparable to nothing else in the film. The point is that Clark is summoning an inner will which stands for more than Bruce's mechanical advantages devoted solely to incapacitation and killing. Hence, we get this really great shot of Bruce actually becoming terrified of Clark, in a way that almost ingratiatingly calls upon his at least momentary compassion. The next close-up of Clark is fixed to his perspective, as he sees the being of his nightmares. This, wordlessly, reveals so much about Bruce's deceptively straight-forward pathology. In the world of his dreams, Bruce dies gloriously via Superman's incinerating gaze (that he believes he used on the Nairobi militants). In the real world, his impulsive recognition of Clark's "humanity" comes through - before he resorts to using toxin again to repress this.

I've developed the perfect Superman formula, for the radio of number of punches thrown to number of individuals shown explicitly being saved, and the number of buildings that can be destroyed vs number of airplanes caught. But it's a secret and WB will have to hire me. Also the villain is Mongol because anything Mongol does is not explicitly Superman's fault, he has nothing to do with Krypton. That you get for free.

RE Beavis: I mean, what's more importantly at the heart of this is that this is not a fight scene, in the traditional sense. This is not even like the Dark Knight Rises scenario where Bruce just goes in half-cocked and gets his rear end handed to him. Clark expresses no desire or willingness to kill Bruce - he merely displays actually being pissed at the guy. The moment he's shot up with the kryptoxin, that's when the battle begins, and it's a constantly self-defensive. There is no 'mutual' violence being perpetrated in this scene, no tête–à–tête. A man is being murdered by a far more economically and, thus, materially privileged man, who also happens to be more experienced in hand-to-hand combat. K. Mongul is like, what if Vince McMahon was as strong as Superman and had a galaxy of ratings to conquer? You're missing the fact that we already got the scene that shows just how out of Batman's league Superman is, and it's the very first time the two meet. The only difference is, it's not filmed like the moment in Returns where Clark walks heroically towards a gatling gun, it's filmed like the punchline to a joke. You watch a chase scene that is filled with the Batmobile crashing through pretty much anything they put in front of it, to the point where it just drives directly through the hulls of boats, and buildings, eventually in slow motion, and then Batman turns a corner, we get the "oh gently caress god has come to take me" look on Affleck's face, and then the Batmobile bounces off of Superman like a lovely wind-up car. It's hilarious. I swear, every time people poo poo talk that movie as if "Batman v Superman is poo poo" is some sort of cinematic axiom, I just want to sit them down in front of the movie and watch them watch it, so I know that we actually watched the same movie.
