If it's some kind of plant or fungus than it would make sense that fire and a weapon designed to crush are going to hurt it more than bullets you can't efficiently chop a tree down with an SMG after all

I guess the thinking is if he's homogeneous a bullet isn't going to do much, but in reality a bullet sends a shock wave through surrounding tissue which would do a hell of a lot more than a baseball bat.
