How do I get it? Unrelated, but it seems really poorly aimed when pandora gets a music themed ad in their cycle. I frequently get an ad for a country artist signed to a casino and I have nothing country related in my channels.

This is how an Austrian politician decided to get voters last year. I have never seen the guy wear sunglasses. Amazingly, he won (with losses, though). I have no idea how his campaign influenced results. What I do know is that a lot of young Austrians are electing basically nazis who brand themselves as young, fresh and contrary to the old, out-of-touch political elite. I wonder if the smiley campaign helped win voters from them?

ToxicSlurpee posted:Sort of. If memory serves you can't legally say "gently caress" on the radio to this day. Traditional, terrestrial radio, anyway; anything publicly broadcast that can be picked up free can have limits put on it by the FCC. They could very easily say "no more [censored] sirens and crashes on the radio, OK?" but haven't. I think part of it is because terrestrial radio is dying so nobody cares enough. After I posted that, I thought "man, I should've been more specific." Sorry. The First Amendment only protects ads in terrestrial AM/FM broadcasts insofar as you don't say anything indecent or profane outside the "Safe Harbor" established in FCC v. Pacifica (10:00 PM to 6:00 AM). Technically, you can get on the mic then and go nuts (and I'm sure some stations do), but the vast majority of radio stations have voluntarily elected to nix the indecency and profanity completely, because it's hard to fill ad slots from 10-6 if the client knows their stuff will be alongside cursing or a raunchy call-in show. Obscenity, however, is not protected speech in a broadcast at any time, so we don't dare cross that line. The differences between obscenity, profanity, and indecency are a bit muddy sometimes, but to give you an idea, reading tentacle rape fan fiction on the air would be obscenity. The FCC can certainly regulate broadcasts (after all, that's part of its job), but when it comes to First Amendment stuff, they tend to put their hands up and back away slowly (that's probably why there are still bleeping sirens and crashes on the bleeping radio). Hell, I don't even think there's a list on paper saying exactly which words you can broadcast and which you can't, but we do know that when kids could be listening, anything on George Carlin's list of dirty words is verboten, as well as anything sexually explicit. Justice Potter did us such a favor when he said "I know it when I see it." I hated that loving thing so much. It started with a couple talking, then the husband gets distracted, wife screams "WATCH OUT," then loud car horns, tires screeching, and a ridiculous car crash mixed in stereo. Then, the wife moans "help...me," and a VO starts about distracted driving. I told my ops manager that it would be a shame if we lost it somehow, and well gosh, it vanished. I guess the new guy must've moved it somewhere?

On the other hand I just keep hearing that loving "singing long irritating sooongs like this ooonnnnee". Elliott only sings as an intro to the letters segment, and it's not as irritating as on the Adventure Hour episode. Listen to the latest episode, it's in the 1998 Godzilla. Then choose whether you'll keep listening. If you don't want to hear the singing, stop the episode when the mid-episode ad break starts. After that, it's just letters and recommendations.

I just want to say iterate that Adam Ruins Everything involves a character in Adam, who is groomed and prepped to be a douchebag, but the facts given are sound (though EXTREMELY given in choice, please look up everything he has a youtube video on through the sources that pop up as he references them) and the character is supposed to be "that rear end in a top hat friend who is probably fishmech, but fishmech is always TECHNICALLY correct, so trust the information given but expand on the sources given to garner a better understanding on the topic at hand" He glosses over important points of information that aren't detrimental to the point, it's just a weaker point because he doesn't properly expound upon it. He'll point out how De Beers fat cats extort you of 2 months of salary for an engagement ring instead of talking about the people who died to gather the diamonds to ship to De Beers to provide the engagement ring. Basically, oftentimes, Adam Ruins Everything pulls punches instead of just laying into you on the reality of the hosed-up nature of the topics he covers. There's also subtle misinformation regarding what sources they pull from, but it's usually accurate with some subtleties missing, presented in the form of "That one guy at the bar who kills conversation with a hot take that's actually true" so it's always important to personally fact-check it regarding, say, his episode on "discuss your salaries!!" when your salary discrepancy won't be the 85k vs 30k divide he points out, but much more likely a 45k to 40k discrepancy due to no reason beyond "well, the other dude asked for more"

It's hard to hear that without disliking that person, so why not go overboard and make it comical? It's really off putting if you don't know it's an affectation. All we have to go on is promotional materials, and that tells us that Adam is exactly as smug and self absorbed as he seems. When I first saw Jim Sterling do the same bit on the Escapist, a friend asked if the show was any good. I told him that, "it's just a greasy, British, Bill Hicks wannabe that can only talk to people because his massive gut stopped him from shoving his head up his own rear end; jerking off on camera for 5 minutes." And the majority of the community also reacted in much the same way, but directly to him. Then he broke kayfabe, said he was listening to the feedback and his next few episodes would be toned down a bit. I've regularly watched his show since, because even when he's wrong, his routine is very well realized and I get a kick out of a fat guy in a bowler hat and trench coat talking about how amazing he is

It really isn't taught hard enough that every single entertainer you ever see from politicians to wrestlers to movie stars to YouTube "personalities" to cafe musicians are all putting on some level of an act. Hunter S. Thompson's drug escapades? Almost entirely exaggerated because that was what was part of his image, although make no mistake the man did do a ton of drugs. Vonnegut's "wise old uncle" affectation? Carefully cultivated. Bill Hicks' act? Very much an act he'd pull out based on how he likely was in his early 20s. Obama keeps any poo poo he has carefully on-lock, even if he's genuinely a classy son of a bitch. Albert Einstein used to have go-to phrases to shut people down when they'd come up to him in Princeton and try to talk to him like he was the Einstein of lore. You'd think this would be common sense--and it is after the fact--yet I and nearly everyone I know has to go through that phase where they deny it because they really want to believe that somewhere out there is a public figure who isn't acting. Do you know which people do that? The crazy burnout drugged-up folk who actually implode and ruin their careers. They're the ones who aren't acting. Everyone else is managing a stage persona. Everyone. Yes him too. I don't even know who you were thinking of but I guarantee they are too.
