It's really easy. If I'm talking with someone who is actually religious and isn't my wife, 9/10 times they're going to be Muslim, probably at a bar where we'll be drinking.

you understand you actually likely knew a ton of christians, muslims, jews, and probably at least a few other faiths in this little globetrotting life, right? You get that's the main reason we're making fun of you?

because your entire point these so many pages has been 'I'm a baby man afraid of anyone saying the word god around me because clearly they're preaching at me, and that's because the very few Christians I've met (because I am a good atheist boy who only makes Acceptable Friends) have all been horrible'.

I would put money on the fact actually being the vast majority of religious people you've met have been perfectly fine, even if they'd agree with the utter horror of Clinton...using her church's motto as inspiration?

I link the NOMA article anytime "new atheism" or related ideas come up.

To me, new atheism is basically fundamentalist Christianity in reverse. Young-Earth creationists use their religion to make claims about the natural world, which is the domain of science, so they run into conflict. New atheists do the opposite and use science and empiricism to make claims about religion. Since religion isn't something you can study empirically, science can't actually say all that much about it. I find most new atheists do not understand basic theory of science.

Most scientists I've worked with are religious to some degree and many hold beliefs similar to NOMA. Gould is essentially arguing that religion and science are both valuable but are separate "magisteria" and they don't actually overlap or conflict at all.

New atheists and fundamentalist Christians are both toxic in the same way; they're exclusionist rather than inclusive and respectful of other belief systems.

edit: and they're both bad science. Internet atheists are really bad at science which is pretty ironic.

No, my point is that Clinton has been really playing up the "God" angle this campaign and I don't like that. I'm fine with pandering but she's been working a very sincere angle that I find discomforting.

Personally that's how I feel but I'm fine with people practicing in the privacy of their home or church. I'm not out to convert anybody or rock the boat. I just don't want Jesus shoved in my face. I also don't like it when religion and politics mix since the results are usually incredibly toxic.

I don't inherently think anyone 'talking about Jesus' is going to do anything good or bad based only on that knowledge of them. I just, ya know, think they like Jesus.

...Do YOU think someone is about to do or say something bad if they talk about God? Like, how hard does this go, do you assume I have any inherent virtue or lack of virtue as a Jew? What about seeing a Muslim dude praying in public, what do you feel that says about his deep inherent morality?

Why would I want to educate myself about something I don't care about? As long as it's not in my face, it's not an issue. What would I gain out of devoting time and energy to this task?
