fliptophead posted:Just started watching Mr Robot and I'm hooked. This show is amazingly good. (S1 on Amazon Prime and hoping they chuck S2 up as well). Rami Malek does a crazy good job in the lead - the corridor scene in Steel Mountain was just devastating. I think it loses steam in the last third of season 1, but was still enjoyable. Great cinematography. Hearing that s2 might not be as good, but I haven't watched any yet.

Last Kingdom would have been better if Matthew Macfayden had been in it beyond the pilot. The lead is just okay.

It felt like everytime someone gave him advice, he regarded only do far as to go the extreme opposite direction which only made his problems worse. It's hard to root for a character who goes out of his way to make the stupid decision. Hopefully season 2 will be better as he showed improvement right at the very end of season 1. I'm gonna say read the books. They're framed as old Uhtred telling the stories to a kid in the monastery he eventually settles at, and his stupidity becomes a lot more endearing and less aggravating when you're seeing his hindsight on it.

This really bugged me in Breaking Bad & (to a lesser extent) Mad Men for a while haha

Season 2 is fantastic, but some people are bothered by the fact that it's a lot more slow and cerebral than season 1.

I was expecting The Overnight to do for me what Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe did, but it kinda fell flat. I can't say I'd recommend it to people.

I enjoyed The Overnight, but it felt like something was lacking at the end. It's very much a Duplass brothers movie.

I thought The Overnight was great but it's one of those films that people either love or hate it seems like.

I enjoyed The Overnight but it's a hard movie to recommend. I think there's an element of how much you empathize with a night of crazy self exploration and the next morning you just move on that makes the ending more palatable. I might be off base there. I really liked it.

I'm in the same boat, I thought it ended great. I like the realistic approach. Like some crazy poo poo happens to you and it might change you for better or for worse but it doesn't rewrite your entire life. You're still going back to work on Monday.

Just finished watching The Invitation, really great at building up the suspense. One question though is what happened to the woman who left early? Are we to assume she was killed?

Hell yes she was killed, the dickhead cult boyfriend knew what was going down and distracted the protagonist so the cult cell leader could murder her unobserved. They couldn't risk her calling the cops because she was really unnerved by what she saw.

I have a guilty pleasure for Korean drama films, even if they get goofy as Hell sometimes. Flu on Netflix is a decent 'Contagion' type flick about an illegal immigrant that unwittingly spreads a mutated strain of avian flu. The ending was a little meh, but the scenes of the chaos going on were good. The Showdown is on Hulu, and it's about three survivors from a battle against the Ming empire are holed up in an abandoned inn, trying to figure out how to get back before reinforcements find their hiding spot. My boyfriend said it made him think of Hateful Eight. Good fight scenes, but the only problem was, it took me about half an hour to keep the two high-ranking officers straight, because they had the same uniform, hairstyle, and facial hair, only one guy had a blue bandanna and the other had a red one. Flashback scenes were easier because ol' Player One had an earring and a fancier hat.

I'm not a big Kevin Smith fan but Zack and Miri Make a Porno is on Netflix and I like Seth Rogen so why not? It's really not that bad but made me laugh about as much as Mallrats, and much like Chasing Amy it's a movie that starts strong and then ends up being an insightful treatise on what a shlubby ultra-hetero guy thinks women/gay people are like.

After slogging through it all summer, I finished all of Prison Break. I felt so committed to finishing it out, but what a turd after season one. Anyone else thinking of doing it, just imagine a fairy tale ending after season one and move on. Starting Marcella and enjoying it after a few episodes. I do enjoy dark British crime.

It is a relic from the waning days of when network shows simply had to be 20+ episodes per season and the filler is tedious. The first season is pretty drat decent despite this but each subsequent season feels about half as good as the one before.

Weiner-Dog just dropped on Prime with no fanfare. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GU87FNA It's the Todd Solondz movie Amazon bought at Sundance. I watched the trailer but from reading the reviews, there seems to be a World's Greatest Dad style bait and switch that people hated.

Every person has their own opinion about the little peaks and valleys that it may have, but overall most consider it a very consistent show. The thing you need to be prepared for is for the show to expand into completely new areas. Don't get so attached to this character or that character and then get bummed out when they are sidelined for long periods of time. Just trust that whatever the current subject is, it's going to be extremely compelling.
