The most recent episode of You're the Worst was an absolutely incredible look at veterans dealing with PTSD. The fact that it's probably the fairest and most honest look at it you can find on television and it's coming from what is ostensibly a sitcom is not exactly a shining moment for America.

My totally crazy idea is to fund VA armories. If you're a veteran and you have a gun, you're entitled to a secure gun locker to store any personally owned firearms, no questions asked.

The only catch is that once you store one, you have to schedule an appointment no less than one week in advance to get them back out.

This of course doesn't fix everything, but suicide is an impulsive act. This buys people time.

I'm really strongly in favor of community armories, gun safes, anything that puts even a trivial barrier between suicidal thoughts and pulling the trigger - but do you think people would voluntarily use them?

My big idea could dovetail into yours, kind of a halfway house transitional step between being in the structured, high-stress environment of the military and being at loose ends in the community at large. Some time with a support structure of people who had similar experiences to you, career/education/financial planning, establish a physical and mental health care plan, and a "home base" of people who already know you that you can turn to if things ever go bad in any aspect of your life. A decompression chamber.

I don't like to reduce a woman's importance to her husband, but Sawant married a dude called Vivek, so if need be, President Trump will just get CHIMmed out of existence.

No one would use a community armory-- the point of having a firearm in your home (for a lot of people) is that it is readily available if some crazy poo poo goes down in an emergency. Just spitballing, I'm not a gun owner.

Yeah, that's what I figure. Unfortunately people use that same logic to oppose gun safes and trigger locks and anything that would make it harder for a suicidal person or curious toddler to do something irreversible.

Yeah this is what concerns me. That someone out there is trying to mess with the system is the very concerning part.

To be fair, attacks on campaigns by foreign intelligence services have been pretty common for at least a decade. Romney and Obama both made a big deal about it in 2012, and there were some issues in 2008 too.

I'm basically just interested in hearing more details, though. There were a few issues with hacked voting systems in 2012, but it was pretty scattershot and I don't recall anything about widespread efforts (although I could be wrong). 23 states having issues and asking for help definitely seems like something new.

There are probably NSA think tanks that spend their days laughing about some pathetically failed Russian attempt at something or rather.

I'm not sure if you're aware but a lot of what the NSA does boils down to mathematics and Russia is much much much stronger than the US when it comes to math. Like Russia and former Soviet countries have been absolutely dominating everyone in international math competitions for several decades now. And a good chunk of the foundational work in communication/information theory was done by Soviet mathematicians (e.g. Kolmogorov).

While I'm not saying we should be worried about Russia hacking the elections, all we can really say is the NSA and the Russian counterpart are probably both really loving competent.

It could be the number was this high for 2012 or 2014. We might be hearing about it because of the other high profile data breaches and intrusions this election.

Right. That's the number one thing separating Trump from everyone else. Diamond Joe would say something like "I'm deeply sorry for mixing this figures up, and veteran suicides is a critical issue that deserves our attention, <pivot to what Obama Admin's done>" and it'd all go away. But Trump can't admit he's wrong, and lacks the PR machine to compensate.

You're the Worst has consistently shown mental illness with more accuracy than any other show on or off television. Last year's episodes w/Gretchen sent shivers down my spine with how real and raw and on target the characterization as well as Aya Cash's portrayal.

Last week's episode w/Desmond Borges was better than that.

I think the best it can be is a repeat of Biden v Ryan, in which the GOP VP looked hideously out of his depth and was just clowned on by the actual VP.

If Kaine can make Pence come off like the joyless buttplug that he is, and undermine the "Well Trump will be like Bush and he'll have a REAL politician Cheneying it up while he Makes Us Great" narrative, then he's done good.

Totally agreed, I don't even think enough voting machines are connected to a network where practical hacking techniques could make a difference. All I'm sayin' is that dismissing Russia's cyber security/warfare because they're poor and dumb is laughably ignorant of their potential capabilities.
