I don't understand why they're so afraid of a Clinton presidency after none of their delusional fears came true under Obama. I mean I get it (they're idiots), but it's still stupid. Their guns haven't been taken away. Sadie Hawkins dances haven't become mandatory. We're still the most powerful country in the world.

Look at it from their perspective: They believe all the conspiracy theories about her. And they believe America has been shown irrefutable evidence of them over and over and over and ignored them. To them, she looks like a monster they've been fighting for 30 years and they haven't landed a single real blow, and now she's about to run them over. Dread indeed!

Going back to healthcare chat, part of the problem with the whole system, especially costs, is how much it costs to become a doctor. While there's a multitude of openings around the country and whatnot, the monetary cost of college is still through the roof, which also leads to people wanting more money so they can pay off college faster. The money and prestige is what drew a lot of people in, and they graduate with 5+ figures of debt. Though it's likely only a matter of time till we see what happened with lawyers where everyone wanted quick and easy money as a lawyer, only to find out there are too many lawyers and not enough jobs (though probably not as bad due to the increase in population). Also ads for Rx drugs (OTC drugs ads are fine with me).

I know I am going to be immediately proven wrong, but "gently caress Andrew Jackson" is, I think, a tenet most of USPol can get behind. theflyingorc posted:What's this about artificial doctor scarcity? That's a new one to me. It is in no way artificial. GP docs are well and truly scarce. One of the most important front-line tools in medical care is disappearing, because it doesn't pay. The work-load is monstrous, and it doesn't pay. Got a buddy. Went into GP Pediatrics. A super, super needed field. This is the guy who takes care of all kids. All of them. Birth through age 18. Knows all the common illnesses, weight-charts, basic wellness for seriously physically developmental years. He's the one who knows where, and when, and how, and, most importantly, IF someone needs to go see a specialist. Buddy of his? Works in specialized Geriatric Neurooncological radiology. He shoots radiation into the brains of the elderly, and hopes that cures their cancer. The radiation doc? Makes six times what the GP does. Does less than half the work. Golfs every day. Owns two lake houses. And a McMansion. That's why we have a doctor scarcity. We treat the front-line docs like poo poo, and make it loving rain on specialists. Who the gently caress stays in the front-line, when you can get PAID somewhere else, for doing less work? (Said the guy going into Social Work, and working as a Sub) You know how hard it was for me to find a Pediatric Endocrinologist when I was first diagnosed? Nearest one was an hour and a half away. Saw them four times a year. Until they got an offer at three times what they were making to come work as a private practice consultant. We incentivize docs to flee the positions we most need them in, and incentivize them to flee into niche specialty fields that are, more often than not, aimed directly at the heart of the aging and ailing Baby Boomers.

Oxxidation posted:My most influential books politically were The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged because they taught me exactly how not to be. Does the influence have to be from the book itself, because I read Atlas Shrugged because a cute guy said I should, and when I told him I had problems with some of its concepts, he said I just didn't understand it. It was at that point I realized that men don't share their interests, they just pull them out where you can see them so you can tailor your praise accordingly, and I resolved to never grind my way through something so unpleasant for the false promise of being treated as an equal ever again. And then I threw the book at his head. Actual books that influenced my politics: The Social Contract by Rousseau, made me start to question capitalism. Lysistrata by Aristophanes made me think more about collective action. The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. Baby's first feminist text.

One of the biggest problems with this is that general doctors are paid peanuts and good luck paying off medical school on that. That plus how you have to rush patients through as quick as possible just kind of kills any desire to be a GP. You have to go for one of the high paying specialties to make the money that everyone things doctors make.
