This is a decent overview of the wool price crash of the early 90s, which was the result of a price floor. The EU's experience with wine lakes and butter mountains is another interesting example of the issues surrounding price floors that's worth looking into if you're interested.

starkebn posted:it seems a lot of farmer co-ops have poo poo constitutions that mean the farmers just get ripped off and the board make bank Murray Goulburn was actually a co-op that did pretty well for itself before enough chucklefucks got greedy to sway the vote to bring a whole heap of idiots onto the board who where promising to make it rain cash from the asian dairy market. Anyway those execs got in, tanked loving everything, never arguing against the predatory pricing schemes of the Big Two, causing the milk price crash and causing MG to be dumped by woolworths as a supplier, and are now in the process of jumping ship with parachute money while the farmers in the co-op are totally hosed. Basicly Co-ops are good unless you get a critical mass of greedy pricks.

It's just bar though so if you want something fancy with seats and a menu maybe consider drowning yourself in the harbour you bourgie gently caress.

Woolworth's head of buying Steve Donohue said it was impossible to blame the tough conditions faced by dairy farmers on the supermarket's own-brand milk, which sells for $1 a litre. "Woolworths' own-brand milk accounts for just 3 per cent of Australia's total milk production, so 96 per cent of Australia's 9.6 billion litres of milk goes into other products," Mr Donohue said.

I haven't even been able to buy non-store brand milk in the last couple of weeks, because it's been sold out every time I've been shopping.

Zenithe posted:Have to spend a few days in Sydney. Any good recommendations for things to do or places to eat at? Depends how mobile you are because public transport is pretty rear end when it comes to getting anywhere that isn't in the CBD but: - Ferry, as everyone else has already stated - Bamboo dumpling bar in surry hills (the tiny pub it's attached to is cool and has amazing beer selection, plus food is cheap as gently caress) - Frankie's pizza in the CBD has tasty pizza by the slice and pinball machines - Literally anywhere in Newtown that you like the look of (recommend getting an old school Aussie takeaway burger from Dean's Diner) - Oxford Tavern in Petersham, get there around 12:30pm on a Saturday or Sunday for an array of smoked meats (little expensive but not completely outrageous) - If you want to do a day trip out to arguably the most gorgeous lookout in the blue mountains, head to Lockleys Pylon and be blown away by the Grose Valley (fair bit of hiking involved but totally worth it, hardly anybody ever goes out there, otherwise just go do the Wentworth falls loop that everyone does, particularly if it's been raining in the days before) - Go canoeing at Audley Weir (take a joint and some swimming togs) - kayaking in middle harbour is pretty sweet too, there's a hire place on Spit Bridge (do not bring a joint because a loving maniac on a 30 foot powerboat blatantly ignoring the speed signs will turn you into an On Water Matter) - Tramsheds in Glebe/Forest Lodge is nice and new, relatively easy to get to on public transport, mostly food only though - Ripples at Milsons Point has a loving cracking view of the bridge but food is a little pricey (quite good though) - Mojo Record Bar in CBD is cool, also Baxter's Inn if you like whiskey - powerhouse museum before they build more soulless apartments there instead - Hero of Waterloo in the rocks is one of my favourite pubs, occasionally there's a jazz band there fronted by a lady who's like a thousand years old who still completely rips it on saxophone, plus there's often markets on there nearby There is seriously a ton of stuff to do.
