Trump likely just infuriated China with the US’s first call to Taiwan since 1979
Dammit Trump could you at least wait until you're sworn in before you trigger World War 3?

Exactly. I can't tell if the MSM is being disingenuous when they express outrage at Trump's so-called "impulsive" tweets in the middle of the night.
Surely they must know that everything this guy does is planned multiple steps ahead. It may seem difficult to a pot-head drop out like BHO, but to any functioning intelligent person it's pretty straightforward.
Trump ran on, and is in the process of supporting (before he's even sworn in), the foundational premise of nationalism. Not just for the US, but every other nation state that desires self determination.
China can be a friend, a reliable trading partner with the US, but that doesn't mean the US won't continue to support countries that reflect our national interest.
To get back to the feigned outrage, I'm convinced it's just a ploy to appeal to a base and the directed advertisements targeted at people who oppose Trump for whatever particular reason.

Technically, Sarah Palin is right. In a perfect world, every company should get exactly the same treatment, there shouldn’t be any special tax deals for just one company.
But, it’s an imperfect world, and right now Trump is still, legally, just an ordinary citizen with few legislative powers. That’ll change on Jan. 20th, when he gets some tools that can change the situation for ALL companies – like reforming the inefficient tax code and rolling back oppressive regulations, which cost companies money.
But for now, he did what he could. Can’t do it this way for every company, obviously.

To be honest, there was a mix of carrots and sticks to push Carrier to make the right decision. Yes, Trump touted the likely reduction in regulatory burdens. Yes, the Pence’s allies in Indiana put together a few pork barrel tax incentives. But the big stick, lingering in the background, was the threat of loss of federal contracts. Carrier’s parent company United Technologies, depends of federal contracts for about a third of their revenues. They did not want to be on the naughty list of an incoming Trump administration.
Is that a bit unseemly? Yes. Do I want to see that happen all the time? No. Hopefully long term, the United States will again become a low-tax, low-regulation environment where there is little corruption and lots of transparency. If that happens, corporations will move work and jobs here naturally.
However, I don’t feel the least bit bad, after decades of corrupt government bargains and deals on behalf of elites and insiders, that the power of the Presidency was utilized on behalf of saving the jobs of 1000 workers, who had no insider connections.
If this is bullying, lets have more bullying.

There’s times when I think those are her primary qualifications. Yes, I am a supporter, but her speaking out against Trump recently poured a huge bucket of ice water on that that support.
We have this guy called zero (obama, of course) and I compared her to obama in my last post. Now read my second line above. Some consider obama to be good looking, he is charming. And he definitely is a talker. They actually have quite a bit in common.
Point is: She has more in common with obama than she does with Trump, who is a proven success.

Governor Palin did not “bash” PEOTUS; in fact she congratulated the people of Indiana over the deal.
Her concerns were about Big Government picking winners instead of letting the market sort it out. But she also expressed confidence in Mr. Trump.
This is another example of the MSM trying to stir up trouble.

Here's the most important point:
One of our priorities is making sure fuel-economy standards reflect market realities
Keeping the currently legislated increased CAFE standards would kill Ford. Ford makes the big bucks on their gas guzzling trucks and SUVs. They make nothing on the econocrap cars like the Fiesta.
Trump should demand a bill abolishing CAFE be ready to sign his first day in office. Let the market, not the EPA, decide what Ford sells.

So why didn't the auto makers push back on 55 mpg CAFE when Obunghole pushed them? The pubbies rolled over and caved on that, too, without a whimper as I recall. Now, with POTUS in their corner, they want CAFE to "reflect market reality" -- I.e., Americans want heavy, safe, powerful cars, NOT coffins on wheels.

It is a win win deal.
Carrier only got modest state tax breaks. I did the math for people on another thread last night. The net 10 year revenue without considering what it would have cost to pay unemployment, job retraining costs and loss of property taxes is over 6950000 to Indiana. So lots of costs vs splitting the difference. Trump strong armed UTX threating their 6 billion in gov contracts. He then let them save face.
Ford doesnt need face saving.

I don’t recall much resistance to that insane rule.
This rule is doing weird stuff to cars. I noticed today while walking through a crosswalk at a stoplight that, when the light turned green, several engines started up. Won’t be long before you are not able to buy a car that doesn’t promptly shut off at every stoplight. Cars now have automatic shutters in the air inlets that close at speed to improve aerodynamics. Looks like big repair bills coming up in five years.

The press didn’t cover it because it didn’t match their narrative. All those automakers sent reps to testify before Congress and issued statements. Pretty much they got the same treatment as anyone who opposes the media narrative - ignored, lambasted, ridiculed, relegated to the back page if coverage is required. Those makers *were* desperately trying to stop it but since the media was controlling access...
And yes, those auto stop-start systems came over from Europe, but they have a reasonable decade-plus long record of reliability. They seem to be doing well over here as well.
The Administration plan was that people would shift over to the ‘clean diesels’ and electric cars that this regulation would force the market to make and purchase. VW torpedoed the first part and reality did for the second.

What would be the additional tax burden on Indianans for 99 weeks of unemployment for 1,000 workers *plus* Carrier's current tax payments (which go to zero were they to go to Mexico) *plus* the loss of income tax payments from 1,000 now-unemployed workers?
Don't get down on Trump for making a phone call and saving 1,000 jobs! It's amazing he could do this at all -- he's not even president yet!
But Trump's stated policy is to reduce the corporate tax rate to 15% across the board. That makes us more competitive. However, as consumers ultimately pay the corporate tax, I've never understood why it is not ZERO.

How many jobs has Ford already off shored? We shouldn’t reward them for that. I’m in favor of rolling out the red carpet for companies that build or expand operations in the U.S., but Ford doesn’t need any special deal. States and cities have been burned by these deals too. The most rewards should go to US startups, and companies that build, expand and hire Americans, not fat cat companies that threaten to leave. If Ford decides to repatriate jobs, then we’ll talk. Otherwise, why not help a new US company replace Ford as one of America’s premier automobile makers?

Since when should the government be in the business of taxing the life blood out of everyone in the first place.
Those *tax breaks* are not some favor the government is showing companies and individuals. Those taxes should never have been put in place in the first place.
Besides, WE'RE the ones paying the taxes. The companies aren't. They just pass the tax costs down along to the rest of us.

Crony capitalism, it just comes natural. I wonder if the millions in taxpayer dollars is a one time thing or the gift that keeps on giving. Even if the tax break was 1million dollars for one thousand jobs, that’s 100,000 per job, likely per year. Paid to play. This mathematical ignorance drives me crazy and I knew he would propose this kind of Obama jobs program, plus a trillion dollar stimulus. I see no diff from he and Obama on these items, yay.

Awhile back there was a blurb on the news about why that's not a good idea........apparently in many vehicles (according to the news) much of the safety mechanisms (airbags and such) don't work when the engine is off.
That aside, if your vehicle is off, there's no time to move it another out of control vehicle comes toward you.

What it really is are shutters mounted in the grill which close at highway speeds to reduce drag because your engine compartment is normally taking in a large excess of air it doesn't need. In pretty much every vehicle this has nothing to do with the engine intake as that is fed from a small area off to the side that is designed to prevent air from blasting through the system. So this Freeper believes that Obama was the first person to be referred to as "President Elect" in the history of the country, and that it was only because he told people to refer to him this way, because he is arrogant. And that now people referring to Trump as President Elect is some sort of passive aggressive attack against Obama.
The loving world these people live in.
My idiot boss would not stop harping on and on about how the news kept referring to Hillary as "Secretary Clinton" because "she's not Secretary anymore so they shouldn't use that title and they're trying to trick people". Pointing out that it is de rigueur to refer to a person by their highest title was rejected with "no it's not!" screeched higher and higher. Also did you know that no President ever campaigned for nominee before Obama?
I swear to Christ I'd like to THINK that harping on this random stuff that's been the norm for 50-60-70 years or, better yet, the entirety of the office, would lead to an awakening as to the fact that every president does this stuff but, in reality, Obama was the first to do all this bad stuff ever and Trump is just giving them a taste of their own medicine! I deal with this kind of idiocy every day at work from prime freeper candidates. A modern fuel injected engine has no issue with ethanol, only shitboxes from the 80's-early 90's are likely to have issues with ethanol that an easy to install $250 in parts wouldn't fix. And the air intake pulls air from those locations because its colder than air on top of a motor like an old school carb'd engine would be sucking. Colder air is denser allowing for more powah to be made.

Or, you know, oh it's no big deal now no I didn't make a big deal out of it before how dare you imply that I'm so ignorant *covers up "THREE FULL TIME CALLIGRAPOHERS IN THE WHOITE HOUSE THANK OBAMA!!!!!!" tattoo.*
It's been eight years of "DID YOU SEE HOW EXPENSIVE MOOCHELLE'S DRESS IS??" and now it'll be eight years of "Oh they were probably donated to Ivanka because designers want their clothes to be seen on the first lady it's not a big deal."
God we're all hosed.
Unfortunately we have a lot of loving retarded people that can vote, as this election shows. If anything it's evidence that public schooling needs to be better funded and improved on.
Well, to everyone except the crazy assholes that think if something isn't perfect you scrap the whole thing. And I blame religion for that
Between this post and his tagline, this guy really, really hates in brother in law it seems.
That guy's tag line
And yet he voted for every Republican since he was legal

Those are certainly related questions, but the question I was addressing was how many so-called leftists and supporters of freedom and democracy and human rights are willing to sell us out to preemptively get pissy on behalf of an abusive dictatorship. The answer is apparently "drat near all".
Yup, democracy ala Dubya's Iraq...it worked so well then, let's do it again!

This is insane. Even if they watch only Fox News all the time, they can clearly see that even their GOP heroes who have long been out of office are ALWAYS referred to by their previous higher title. GOVERNOR (Jeb) Bush. SPEAKER Gingrich. GOVERNOR Romney. You have to be extremely and willfully obtuse to say or think like this.

When it comes to politics people's memories shut down completely. Generally they really honestly never noticed before but now that someone just shows up and goes "HEY EVER NOTICE THAT..." they take it as fact because, well, they never noticed.

Oh, come on. You can't just randomly spout off about "democracy and freedom and human rights" if it's going to piss off the biggest country in the world. These things are delicate, and it's not a sell-out to acknowledge that.
For some of us, the "Taiwan problem" isn't just a hypothetical we can pretend to care about every few years.

So let's turn the whole area upside down instead...that's smart
I guess everyone will have to add an asterisk to their Taiwan just for you that states what they feel so you know they're always feeling that way instead of just now and then

These are people who have been long trained to ignore any facts that could possibly interfere with their rigid worldviews. Anyone independent enough to think critically about something that would dare question their narrative is either beaten into line or cast out. No, they cannot notice something like that and hate anyone who would.

Given the robber barons, anti-intelligence bastards, and bigots Cheeto Benito is appointing without any real opposition I doubt that improvement in public education is coming for at least 30 years. If anything has been proven, the only hope for lasting improvement is that white people stop being the majority all too soon. If not, then the republicans will always be able to convince them to slit their own throats so long as they promise to hurt minorities even more.

You know what would be incredibly awesome on a moral level? If Trump said "Israel is an apartheid state, and we will not support them until they no longer abuse Palestinians." It would be fantastic.
Do you know what kind of chaos that would cause if he actually said that?

You're more optimistic than I am. Honestly, I think even if we do improve public education, it doesn't matter. The authoritarian mindset of these kinds of people is going to influence their kids. Some of the kids escape from it, but there's plenty who don't. I knew a few people in college who were taking biology who said "Evolution is a lie, so when they ask us about it on the test, I'll just say 'I have been taught to say' so it's clear that I know it isn't true." Fixing the school only goes so far when you have kids that go home to parents that say "It doesn't matter what they taught you in that building, global warming is a lie."

quote:These generic “this holiday, buy...” commercials make me hate their generic season with a passion. I remember the Christmases of boyhood when even Dennis the Menace comic books dedicated their entire issue to Christmas in Bethlehem.
I absolutely hate “holiday.” It’s a profanity to me.
