http://www.kolotv.com/content/news/Oakland-unveils-stadium-plan-to-keep-Raiders-in-Bay-Area-405702935.html posted:

AKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Oakland and Alameda County leaders will vote Tuesday on a financial and development plan to build a $1.3 billion football stadium at the Coliseum site to keep the Raiders from moving to Las Vegas.

Mayor Libby Schaaf and other local leaders presented details Friday of the plan reached with the Ronnie Lott Group and Fortress Investment Group. Schaaf said the deal is "responsible to the team, the league, the fans and the taxpayers."

The Raiders had no comment on the plan and owner Mark Davis is committed to moving to Las Vegas, where a $1.9 billion stadium project was approved by Nevada lawmakers in October.

The Raiders must get approval from 24 of the 32 NFL owners before being allowed to move.

I assume this will get the same reaction as the previous story, which was the Lott group wants a percentage of the team, so it doesn't mean much.

Sure, but what is the scenario where SD gets an NHL team? They certainly wouldn't play in the sports arena and the city isn't going to build a new arena for a hockey team. The NHL arguably needs to contract and they just expanded to Vegas. Maybe San Diego could steal the Coyotes? But again, where would they play?

I am of the opinion that the gulls coming back was a market test for an actual pro team. I have no backup for this but it is my hunch. I am probably just dreaming, but I miss going to Kings games (haters vacate) and gulls games only fill part of that void

Your hunch is off. NHL is really only open to the last team in Seattle, Portland, Toronto, or Quebec City.

They brought the Gulls back because VVC Center is under utilized and the team always made money and should never have left.

I know the GTA is like Canada's New York but does the NHL think there is enough support for a second team? Are they hoping to bleed off the Toronto Habs support? Where are you going to stick them? Mississauga?

Re: the Ronnie Lott group.

quote:

IRVING, Texas – As city and council officials prepared to vote Tuesday on a term sheet for a $1.3 billion stadium deal that supporters hope will keep the Raiders in Oakland, the NFL’s point man on stadium matters raised significant concerns about the viability of the plan.

Those concerns include the involvement of a private investor group that would have an exclusive and confidential 60-day window to negotiate with the city and county on the land it would develop as part of the project, according to the term sheet released late last week.

“I think the intentions are good,” NFL executive vice president Eric Grubman told USA TODAY Sports at the league meetings Tuesday. “But I don’t think there’s been any progress that suggests a breakthrough anytime soon.”

Grubman said a friendly meeting Monday to discuss the term sheet in San Francisco lasted roughly 90 minutes with representatives from the investor group -- managed by football hall of famer Ronnie Lott and the Fortress Investment Group -- as well as non-elected Oakland and Alameda County officials, the NFL and the Raiders, but not team owner Mark Davis.

There is no deal on the table for the team or league to consider right now, Grubman said, adding there are parallels to past failed efforts involving a Raiders stadium proposal and a private investor, including businessman Floyd Kephart last year.

“And I dare say if you pull up the descriptions of what the agreement was with Mr. Kephart when they entered into it and then the problems that ensued, it is a carbon copy of what they’re about to enter into today and the problems that are likely to ensue,” Grubman said.

Time isn’t on Oakland’s side either. The Raiders are eligible to apply for relocation when the regular season ends Jan. 1. Davis publicly committed to Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, who in October signed a bill approved by the state Legislature for $750 million in public funding towards a nearly $2 billion stadium project that would relocate the Raiders to Las Vegas, with backing from billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson. There is still the Oakland Athletics’ baseball stadium issue to sort out as well.

Approval by the Alameda County of Board of Supervisors and the Oakland City Council would allow administrators to negotiate a formal agreement with the Lott Group/Fortress that is pitched to include $350 million in public money by way of land and future revenue. But approval also would mean local officials have “given up the ability to have a direct conversation with the Raiders” about an alternative solution, Grubman said.

“I think it’s a mistake to add third parties and fourth parties to what really should be a two-party negotiation,” Grubman said. “In this instance, you put someone who needs to profit and you may put other motivations in there. The core task is to find something that works for the Raiders and the community, and when you put developers in or other third parties, then you’re going to have there the things that are important to them in the conversation. And that’s what happened two years ago and one year ago and I think that’s what happening now.”

The Raiders would need 24 of 32 owners to approve relocation. The team is expected to provide an update on developments in Oakland at the league meetings Wednesday, and a vote could come as soon as next month.

Grubman declined to comment on developments in Las Vegas or the stadium situation involving the San Diego Chargers, who have the right to join the Rams in Los Angeles. If the Chargers decline, the Raiders would have that option as well.

While Grubman wouldn’t call the involvement of a third party a nonstarter in getting something done in Oakland, he said: “It's an enormous roadblock in any city if you're trying to put a deal together with a sports team and you're outlining the basis on which the land be developed, controlled, taxed, improved, and the sports team is not in the conversation. That's a fairly big impediment to getting a deal done.”

Spanos thinks he will make more money being in the LA area instead of SD. Also he's not rich enough to build his own stadium; in LA he's in a new stadium that someone else paid for.

I think he wants to move to LA to increase the value of the franchise for his kids. Which is funny because AG Spanos and John Spanos, who are actually running the day to day business and football operations of the team starting this past year, want to stay in San Diego

I can't speak much for AG on the business side, but I'm not too unhappy with John on the football side. I think him hiring Telesco was good. Telesco has brought a lot of good pieces here, and who knows what happens if we aren't the most injured team in the league the last two years.

The younger Spanoses were born and raised in San Diego and have done everything but flat out say that they want to stay, which they won't do because Dean is still the main guy. Everything they've done in the community to try and get a stadium built, the charity work and appearances they've made while Dean is being a total recluse is pretty telling.

Is half of LA really a more valuable market than all of SD? I think that "half" is a bit generous, since the Chargers have to actively win over new fans, while competing with the Rams and whatever other teams LA football fans root for now. Doing that without winning will be tough, especially since they may be playing in a tiny soccer stadium with facilities that are worse than many college teams. This may also be bad for the NFL in general, since San Diego fans won't root for the Chargers and may stop watching football altogether. If this move reduces the total number of fans doing things like watching games on TV and buying branded merchandise then the NFL may have reason to block it.

Being the 2nd team in LA is much more valuable than staying in San Diego, new stadium or not.

Spanos and Kroenke still have to come to an agreement, and the NFL and Kroenke could conceivably make the terms so disadvantageous that Spanos would be forced to stay.

Couldn't they, you know, unapprove it? Just because they liked the idea a year ago doesn't mean that they haven't changed their minds in the last 12 months. The Rams awful attendance, the Raiders recent successes, and the Chargers being wholly uncompetitive are all relevant factors in the question of Can/Will LA Support The Chargers?
