IMO, slanting a game's mechanics slightly in favor of offense versus defense makes for more interesting gameplay. It's part of how simple things like who wins on ties for opposed rolls (attackers should) make a meaningful difference in the flow of the game.

What are the Elemental discovery rules? If a 'Mech winds up in an adjacent hex, will the point be discovered? I'm just wondering if there's a better way to search that pocket of woods than poking it with a stick.

They should be revealed if a friendly unit with an Active Probe comes within range of wherever they're hiding. You shouldn't need to be adjacent to them to find them, but as you saw that is one way to discover that they're there!

BattleTech favors the side with initiative, attacker or defender is a meaningless distinction. The side with initiative is assumed to be the side on the offensive that turn.

Edit: It's also why I can't win if I try to engage the players in a maneuvering war. I have to either play the attrition game or intimidate them into making mistakes or I'll lose from turn 1 even with a huge numerical advantage.

In this case it's just basic tactical logic, not a bias towards attack or defense or even anything unique to Battletech. If half of the players choose aggressive moves that get better odds to hit but expose them to better odds to be hit in return, while half of them play conservatively and offer up lower odds in either direction, it means the opposition is going to do more damage because they all have good shots on the aggressive players while the defensive players aren't firing at full effect. It doesn't meant that playing aggressively is inherently superior, and either one could be the correct decision depending on circumstances. The critical thing is that whatever the players do, they have to do together.

Ikuta Glacier: Tactical Update 5

Explosions blossomed around the Wolf Spider’s shoulders as Yeva opened fire with both of her Timber Wolf’s LRM-20s. Assisted by an Artemis V fire-control computer, less than a handful of her salvo missed the skillfully-piloted enemy `Mech. She leveled her right-arm omni-pod in the enemy `Mech’s direction and fired a ranging shot with the large laser there, drawing the enemy pilot’s attention straight to her.

Her dark lips twisted into a wicked smile as she broadcast “The Timber Wolf is the superior machine,” and shot the Wolf Spider square in the cockpit with her heavy laser. Overpressure blew the transplex canopy plates outward as her shot vaporized everything inside. The Wolf Spider topped and fell. Nova Commander Makena’s Stormscrow almost looked disappointed, its carefully-reinforced fists already raised as if to punch the enemy officer in the back. Yeva gave the Nova Commander an apologetic wave.

“The Hellbringer B has ceased maneuvering,” Radivan’s voice was emotionless and mechanical, a sure sign he’d used his Necrosia stimulants. “Cockpit life support is offline. They will be killed by their own cooling vest in less than twenty seconds if they do not abandon the cockpit—can anyone confirm? I cannot see—is the pilot abandoning?”

Yeva swiveled, zooming on the now-still Hellbringer. There was motion in the cockpit but the command couch was empty. “Confirmed, pilot is out of her command couch.”

“Disregard Hellbringer B in favor of active combatants,” The Nova Captain’s voice rumbled through the open comms. “Monitor for and be wary of signs of renewed aggression.”

“New contacts,” someone from the Command star reported. Yeva couldn’t place the voice through the usual battlefield jamming. “Five—six contacts from the north. It looks as though one of the enemy’s scout stars evaded our fighters. The sixth `Mech—is not transmitting an IFF transponder code. Battle computer designates it a ‘Grand Dragon.’ Does anyone else have visual?”

“A living insurgent,” August laughed, “That is interesting. The Widowmakers haven’t done quite so good a job cleaning house as they’ve claimed. This newcomer will have no love for the Widowmakers—do not fire upon it unless it fires upon you.”

Elementals in Ironhold Armor gain a -1 bonus to gunnery with no penalties. All other Elementals instead gain a -2 bonus to Anti-Mech attacks with no penalties.
Icy Conditions Ice hexes are in play. At the bottom of the ravine, all ice hexes are treated as though they are elevation -6. Wrong orders due date on there, PTN.

But oh my god that was a beautiful turn. Excellent work, Goonstar.

Soiled Meat
The date is correct. I don't expect players to get orders in on Christmas Eve, and next Tuesday is the 27th.

Someone is getting this as an avatar. I don't know who, but it's gonna happen.
Uh... did I mistype something? I thought I sent orders to kick the Wolf Spider D as well.

Good thing I ran out of MP, because that's exactly where I want to be (1634), I put a typo in my orders. :psyduck:

E: PTN, looks like you made a typo yourself, my personal goal says I've shot two mechs in the back so far, but this is first back stab I've made so far.

E2: Holy poo poo this round! :psyboom:

GM errors in player's favor stay! :)

(And now you have another backshot lined up on that Crimson Langur, too.)

I had a video of that when I was about 6.

I remember it being shit.

I eagerly await the Goonslaughter of Mechwarrior Santa. It's too bad he didn't bring his reindeer or elf army along with him.

The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.
Stole my thunder :argh:
Can't be mad though, because Timber Wolves are my favorite mech.

Running out of officers to punch though.

Also 10% humiliation is 10%

Ooh poo poo I forgot the Corona point that just showed up: Good news is they can't swarm you. Bad news is they do a shitload of damage, because they pack 5 full MPLs.
But your Plasma Cannon does TERRIBLE TERRIBLE things to them: 3d6 damage, and *every* trooper takes the same damage, not just one. So you have a better than 60% chance of wiping out the whole point with one shot.

drat, that Crimson Langur Prime is probably going after my Wraiths, but killing a squad of elementals in one shot is almost too good to pass up.

If I move to 1931 and face 1831, can I hit the Corona and Crimson Langur Prime, or can I only torso twist once?

Probably, but you can re-swarm the Warhawk this turn (I don't think it stood back up, and swarming a prone target is super duper easy), then you can play LoS with the Crimson Langur if it keeps coming for the Wraiths. One more swarm attack probably finishes that Warhawk off, too.

Well all the mechs that showed up weigh more than 200 tons put together, so I was basically right. It was a Nergal.

Seems a decent trade, engine hit and all the back armor for a heavy. Going to be some interesting maneuvering now.

PTN, could you work out whether the Huntsman is still standing or not?
