MeLKoR posted:I'm loving dying here. Un-loving-believable! This is about the only thing that could have surprised me at this point, and they dropped it on Christmas eve. I'm completely amazed. I never thought the engine change would ever actually happen. Any defenses of Lumberyard being the same as "Star Engine" are completely contrary to all the claims of years spent customizing the engine with CryTech employees. This is an engine change, if any of their claims about all their customizations and 64 bit changes should be believed. It's mindblowing beyond anything anyone here ever imagined would actually happen. Any talk of engine changes were completely theoretical, but they actually did it.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a deal with Amazon where they are essentially now the publishers of the game. Watch Shitizens try to adopt that into their narrative.

I see quite a few deluding themselves into thinking only AWS infrastructure will be used rather than Google Cloud. You certainly don't need to use a new engine to move your hosting environment to AWS EC2 instances.

http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2016/12/24/star-citizen-has-changed-game-enginesquote:Updated: I've had a response from CIG director of communications, David Swofford, to say that the relationship between CIG and Amazon is that of them being a regular licensee of Amazon's technology. The reason for the announcement today was that it was turned on with the release of 2.6. He also confirmed that all the work CIG had done to expand the CryEngine has been transitioned to the new engine. What? I guess crobbler just turned on technology today.

Bah from RSI forums posted:Hmm... this is weird. The 2.6 PTU already had Lumberyard's logo on the splash screen, but the servers apparently weren't running on AWS (my ping was far too high for that). For regular plebeian game developers you're forced to use AWS on your online services if you use Lumberyard, I wonder if CIG made a specific deal with them. Yes, I'm sure that's the explanation, it couldn't be because the game is poo poo.
