Also tried the fire alarm plus lethal syringe route like others and screwed it up, spotted by someone on the ground floor. Managed to get to the boat with a pint of blood left, so success but sadly no SA.

Once I get the winter coat and there are (presumably) no other SA-based unlocks for elusive targets, I'm going to start doing these the way they were intended. ...but I want that coat first

I put the fire extinguisher behind the ET's chair while he was in the kitchen and placed a breaching charge on it. I bumped into his bodyguard while he was walking back just to make sure I only killed the target. Then I stupidly ran in front of a camera and made someone suspicious on my way out. The winter coat eludes me again! Also the killer accident fire extinguisher is stupid, it should work that way with propane tanks instead

poptart_fairy posted:hmm, Paris appears to have a lot of content. By virtue of… …being the first thing they released …being the one full map everyone has …being a really solidly built map in terms of geography and tiering and NPC behavirous …and their desire to fulfil their “continuous updates” deal even for people who just bought the base package, Paris has become a kind of default fallback map for everything they do. It's a bit more open now, but for a while, it was more than a 50:50 chance that a new ET or escalation would be for the Paris map, partly because they had to give the Paris-only owners something and partly because they probably know how to build for that map, and that has become a self-reinforcing mechanism. Early on, they also used Paris as a test bed for many of the edge-case scripting and AI tests that went into some of the more complex or outlandish contracts. They were still learning what worked, not just in terms of building it, but in terms of how players approached it and what was actually fun in practice. Consequently, while Paris has a lot of content, it also has a lot of content that isn't all that good, or which relies on some very niche, almost emergent mechanic that almost kind of nearly doesn't work. Some escalations, in particular, can be really frustrating as a result of this experimenting, and a fair bunch of the others are a bit repetitive, because, at the same time, they hadn't quite learned to really be creative within the formula yet. So yes, Paris has a lot of content and one of the stronger storyline maps, which is great if you buy into the starter package, but it also has some of the worst parts of Hitman as part that content. That volume comes with all the pros and cons you'd expect.

That ET was a roller coaster of emotion. It solidified my hatred for the inconsistency of being spotted through walls that has existed since someone with x-ray vision spotted me throwing Sato into a bin in Paris. Initial plan was a fire extinguisher trap for him walking out of the kitchen. Tried about a dozen times to perfect knocking out the two waiters who go through the area outside the kitchen door. It was a crapshoot whether the lady standing at the desk would spot me when batoning those two. Got super annoyed and said gently caress it. Grabbed a fire extinguisher and placed it on the table next to him. Wedged in between the bush and the railing on the balcony, then waited until his bodyguard looked away and threw a coin. Got the bodyguard to walk past the planter and out of sight with the coin. The Food Critic stood up for the coin, but then sat right back down. I ran behind his chair, shot the extinguisher once, then sprinted for the boat out the front door. Silent assassin on a semi-reckless attempt after giving up on my master plan. Two more for the winter coat (loving cameras on the Guru!). The rewards are great, and definitely add to the effort put into the elusive targets, but sometimes the requirements are too finicky to be enjoyable. Side question: on one attempt I did successfully stab his bodyguard with the emetic syringe without being spotted by anyone else. "Compromised" flashed up for a little bit before the emetic kicked in. Would that ruin an SA run, or is it just a weird artifact?

Managed to SA this guy by wearing a guard disguise and dropping a gun in the far corner of his nook to pull the guard away. Then I bumped into the target to make him get up and stuck him with a lethal syringe when he turned back around. I didn't even realize he ever left that spot. Guess I didn't wait around long enough.

Anyone else notice the jarring difference in the chef's new VO for this target? He abruptly shifts to the world's worst French accent when speaking to the Critic. Guess its not surprising given that half the people in the game speak like surf bros for no reason, but this one really jumped out at me.

Man, I'm kicking myself for not getting in on this sooner. I'm having an absolute ton of fun in Paris and the ICA facility, and while I'm using baby aids to help me, I'm already getting irritated at myself for being sloppy and have subconsciously planned suit-only routes for certain assassinations. Well that's fair enough! I did notice a substantial drop in challenges, etc, for later maps so I'm assuming the content becomes more refined later on. All the input's appreciated mind.

Paris has the most poo poo to do, but all maps are good and different enough that each one gets you a substantially different experience when playing. Each map basically contains enough content for a full game if you want to 100% everything, while still remaining fun to play. It's definitely my goty 2016.

Oh well, good to know the enemic wouldn't have helped anyways. Turns out emetic does nothing when the target is alerted, which he was because of the fire alarm. Wonder if he'd go to the bathroom if you stuck him in the kitchen though, I wouldn't mind drowning that smug prick in a toilet. I ended up just snapping his neck, but in retrospect I regret not just planting a chef's knife in the back of his skull for poetic justice.

Am I right in assuming that most of the NPC routines are on a loop, and won't be broken by anything short of open combat?

poptart_fairy posted:Am I right in assuming that most of the NPC routines are on a loop, and won't be broken by anything short of open combat? Sort of. NPC routines are on a loop until you arrive in their vicinity while they're at certain points. Then the routine stops while they act out whatever the scene is in front of you, and then they go back to it. For example, in Paris, Margolis goes from the auction -> to the balcony to drink wine -> to her office for a bit -> back to the auction -> to her private room to hang around there for a while, and repeat. But if you arrive while she's in her private room, she'll drop her AI wherever it stands to do her conversation with her bodyguard about whatever that's about (I dunno I haven't listened to the whole thing). You can also interrupt AI routines by doing mission objectives that draw them away to a scripted event. For example, triggering the fireworks causes Margolis to walk out to the balcony to dump on Novikov while he whines about it. Then she goes back to the routine after she's done that. You can also interrupt/speed up routines by distracting them (bump into them, be almost spotted while trespassing, exploding something nearby, setting off the fire alarm, throwing coins/wrenches/whatever).

Thanks guys! I've barely touched Paris since getting engrossed in the ICA Facility escalations and challenges - they're teaching me a lot about the game's systems, and I can already see myself sinking far too much time into the drat thing. Treating them as really morbid puzzles rather than stealth segments has does wonders for how I approach things, which was my problem with the original Hitman games. Nailing the level five escalation on the ICA Facility was pretty disturbing due to the thought process behind it. I can't just knock people out so if I garrote Guard D and drag him into the box before the timer expires, I can move on with his disguise and murder KGB Agent A, giving me enough time to hide his corpse and use the disguise to murder and hide Engineer B, which means I can sneak back up to Guard E... Surprised how fast everything flows.

I just started this game a few days ago and this food critic elusive target is my first. I don't see him anywhere with hitman vision. I thought, maybe on elusive target missions, they aren't marked red. So, I went poking around the dining room, didn't see him. Walked into the kitchen, and I swear to gently caress I saw the guy talking to the head chef. Threw a knife into his head from behind cover, but "non-target killed" popped up. I got away without being seen so luckily I'm still free to look around, but I haven't seen anyone else who appears to be the target. Did I have to wait for some sort of extra identification step like hearing someone speak his name? I knew what he looked like from the intel briefing so I figured that would be enough. I'm curious if I have encountered a bug, hosed something up, or just plain killed the wrong dude after my eyes played tricks on me.

With some of the funkier AI glitches it might go against you if they noticed it before you blew it up and that somehow counted as suspicious in the same way you can get noticed by a target right before you kill them and it can gently caress up SA. So...it depends? Maybe, I'm trying to figure out how I missed the SA rank on this when I was never spotted and it told me the kill was an accident.

dumb and kinda scared posted:Well thats kinda stupid, isn't it? Why would I take a syringe on a mission when I can garrote or strangle with my bare hands to the same effect? Because the poison is quicker and also not as obvious as the other two. A two-second gap lets you jab someone and walk away, all while your SA/SO status is intact; choking them out or garrotting them leaves you standing there for quite a while with an obviously murdered corpse in your hands, right as someone turns around.

After the fact, sure, but the animation is real deceptive and its easy to get caught in the act. It seems subtle, but eagle eyed npcs will spot that poo poo out of the corner of their eye from across the room and behind some plants & a fence, you need to make absolutely sure nobody has hope of seeing it. Hell, I've had my share of targets spot me do it with the eyes in the back of their head in the half second between the needle going into their spine and death.
