A true space wizard does not lower themselves to the use of mere mundane weapons.

Those are strictly for cutscenes.

The Eviscerator isn't a "mundane" weapon.

It's a portable war crime.

Mass Effect 2's game feel is certainly a massive improvement, but it is still a bit too restrictive when it comes to cover. Not having a dodge button to move quickly from cover to cover or dive out of the way is rough.

I'm hanging out for the game with great shooting mechanics, but instead of stationary cover/bunny-jumping/circle-strafing for defense you block/dodge/parry like a swords and dragons action game. That biotic shield from the Andromeda trailer is a step in the right direction.

Cutscene stuff was totally the laziest. Why else would you use weapons you didn't even equip?

Heck even when a pistol is called for you usually pull out a completely different pistol than the one you are currently carrying.

It's the sci-fi version of the generic execution knife you have in Dragon Age. The same knife you can never actually get in game but produce for all the necessary cutscenes.

What's weird is that in the original Mass Effect when the situation called for your squad to be intimidating they would react based on their class.

So Garrus and Wrex would pull out guns, but Liara would start glowing blue and Tali would fire up her omni-tool.

so clearly they can do it, they just decided against it in the sequels

Mymla

Did adept Shepard glow blue in those situations, or just pull out the assault rifle she has 0 points in?

I don't know because I exclusively play good classes.

In the sequels I think there are more occasions where Shepard brandishes or uses a weapon, with a wider range of potential 'correct' animations (what does a Sentinel do - pistol, SMG, biotics or tech? what if they specialised into shotguns? what if they bring a Sniper Rifle to a close-range standoff?), plus a larger set of potential squadmates who also need to be accounted for. I think the ever-present Avenger rifle was chosen as a compromise that will look okay in most cutscenes and also matches most players, who overwhelmingly will be playing default Soldier John Shepard.

There isn't. Shepard always has the Avenger assault rifle, Predator pistol, or very rarely in certain specific moments a Carnifex pistol.

Leviathan has a brief scene where your two squadmates will be seen firing the guns you equipped them with, but it's not reliable. Sometimes it works (getting you scenes like Garrus firing a Widow on full auto), sometimes it gives them a stock Avenger.

Vanguards are homing missiles.

Though I'll admit that vanguards didn't really get great until ME3 when they got nova.

No, I mean there are more occasions when the script calls for Shepard and co. to [shoot a gun] or [point a gun at bad guy], because there is more primary content in ME2 and ME3 and they have more action-centred cutscenes. There are then more potential 'correct' animations that need to be checked for each of these moments - does Shepard use a gun or biotics or tech? what type of gun does their class allow? did they pick a bonus gun on the Collector Ship? which specific model of gun do they use? is this gun appropriate to the context, e.g. is Shepard gonna blast their shotgun wildly when they're supposed to be in a long-range firefight? what about all of the above, but for the two squadmates, out of a cast of 12 and 8?

They were probably pressed for time and made the grave error of assuming Bioware fans wouldn't give a poo poo about something so inconsequential.

There was a bit of news I saw yesterday that claimed they are using face capture for better facial animations, possibly trying to say that the reason Ryder's face looked weird in that demo was because her facial captures hadn't been finished yet?

It doesn't seem like some super nitpick detail , you equip a gun then he has a different gun in the cutscene. It always looks like a bug.
