I watched Sleepless today. Apparently it's a remake of a French movie but comes across as a very blatant ripoff of Taken (down to an ending that is a completely unearned setup for a sequel scenario that is the same as Taken 2) except the majority of the film is set within 5-6 repeated hotel settings. Scoot McNairy is capable of being a good villain but was terribly miscast here. It's just a dull slog, which is a shame because the beginning does show signs of promise. Would have been at least a bit more interesting if Jamie Foxx actually was a corrupt cop and not an IA informant. Given that they give this away in one of his first scenes, but then don't mention it again until what would be an otherwise twist ending, I wonder if they actually decided to do this originally but went back on it after getting nervous about having a corrupt cop be a hero..

I cannot recall the specifics, but the original series was put together while the manga was ongoing. Rather than add filler or pad to get more plot from the creator, they just take a clean split about halfway in and suddenly start solving mysteries and reworking characters in their own fashion. This comes to a head in the conclusion film where one of the brothers is literally in Nazi Germany in our world.

Years later, Brotherhood was a straight adaptation of the then-finished manga.

Oh man, there was one character in 2003 anime, Rose, that I made the manga author basically went "gently caress that" when the showrunners had her gang-raped by occupying soldiers and turned into some sort of mute holy figure akin to Mary. Since she was still writing the manga as the first series was airing, Hiromu Arakawa apparently wrote Rose's return in the manga as been an independent woman who was rebuilding her town, raising adopted children, and definitely had not been raped.

e: also, yeah, the Rose thing was one of the things specifically coming to mind when I said the FMA manga/Brotherhood and the 2003 show have absolutely diametrically opposed themes. Brotherhood is all about how humanity can rise above the lovely things in its past and make something better. 2003 is all about how we'll never ever put those atrocities behind us, how every step forward for human progress is two steps back for world peace, and how the world is utterly hosed.

i read that entire "expose" and unless im missing something its like the least scandalous thing on earth. The first third is about how lisa frank is wealthy & interested in her self-image, the second third is about how theyre a bad company to work for because of franks' abusive husband and the third part is about how she divorced him and he isnt in charge of the company any more.
mainly i found myself endeared to lisa frank with parts like

quote:

"They seemed like very opulent people for Tucson," Marcia said of Frank and Green, who drove "flashy cars," had their own 12-seat, twin-engine airplane, and a mansion characterized by one Tucson resident who spoke to Jezebel as a "nouveau riche monstrosity of a house." (Frank has described her house as "purple and yellow and hot pink and light green and orange.")
and the degree to which author editorializes to pump up relatively average statements is like...did u wait till the paper was due to start working on it so u had to just force your comparisons through??

quote:

"In my own little way, I understood Michael Jackson," Frank said in a 2012 interview with The Daily, intimating that her own level of fame is in some way comparable to that of the late King of Pop and has thus affected how she interacts with the public.

"If I use my credit card…and they go 'Oh my gosh, there's Lisa Frank who makes the stickers!' I go, 'Isn't that the craziest thing that I have the same name?'"

That she believes she can comprehend or relate to what life was like for the most famous entertainer of all time—who was notoriously viewed as a victim of his own celebrity—is confounding. But it also provides an illuminating peek into the mogul's mindset.

Ask Frank's former employees about her, however, and her psychology or personality is not usually the first thing they mention. Most, when speaking to Jezebel, went straight to her "super thin" appearance.

Lisa Frank herself seems fine. The company sounds absolutely horrific, like an actual no-poo poo sweatshop for making cutesy stationery. It says he's not in charge anymore, but it also doesn't say that any of their policies have changed, whatsoever.

i guess but the article heavily implies that the bad working conditions were like entirely because of him & its all phrased in the past tense as well

quote:

When asked what the root of the problem was at LFI, former employees—some of whom spoke directly to Jezebel, while others are on record in court documents—all had the same answer: LFI CEO James Green.

quote:

"I said, 'Oh, Lisa, remember me? I worked for you.' And she said, 'Oh, did we fire you?' And I was like, 'Yeah.' And she was like, 'Oh, I'm sorry. I wasn't really a great employer.'"

etc.

Green sounds a lot worse, but there's still poo poo like

quote:

I personally heard [Lisa Frank] scream at sales managers and threaten their lives if they hosed up a presentation.

quote:

Every day was so stress full [sic] and hearing Lisa's voice downstairs on a speaker phone made my blood run cold. I had many instances where she abused me verbally.

though it's possible those people were a bit confused and thinking of the VP Green was having an affair with.

Edit: Oh god, read the sidebar on that "Frankly Speaking" newsletter that's titled "The 110%" solution. It's from 2 years after Green became President and CEO. Green definitely comes off worse, but Lisa Frank did let him run her company for more than a decade before first trying to oust him, so she's definitely not blameless.

Nah, that type of thing would inevitably be too weird and creepy. I just think there's a pretty wide range of sex and gender politics issues to work with. One example might be that Smurfette as the only female in a man's world wants another smurf female around to be friends with. But then she has to come to terms that her new friends are competitors for the attention and/or affection of the smurf guys which is something she's never had to deal with before. I think that kind of premise would be relate-able to women who work in IT or other similarly male dominated fields.

It's definitely interesting but... it's 50 episodes long and 50 episodes of that kind of bleakness is an absolute loving slog to get through. The ending is also kind of a wet fart that comes completely out of left field and doesn't really make a ton of sense.

I would say check out some of Sho Aikawa's other stuff for the same themes as 2003, just done better, but... they're kind of not done better. Dude's kind of a poo poo writer, honestly. So I take it xXx 3 doesn't have anything quite as funny as two dudes unloading an entire clip into each other and then yelling so hard the bullets proceed to fly out of their bodies. Shame.

Underworld is hilarious at times because it plays it straight. The new xXx is a dumb action movie that knows it is a dumb action movie, but it while it is somewhat fun at times it is never funny. Xander Cage is still written like an x-treme version of James Bond: he makes cheesy comments, has sex with all the ladies, pretends to be a cool cat while behaving like a rebel without a cause. It was a terrible character back then, it is a terrible character now.

They try to give this movie the Fast & Furious approach when it comes to the cast, by having a wide range of cool dudes and ladies. What Xander Cage really needs however is a sidekick, a straight man, that constantly calls him out on his stupid poo poo.
