Without Schumacher development would have stalled. Man was cold blooded winning machine, which is one of the the reasons the brits did not like him - internet gets a very distorted very British view of F1 history. Ferarri of that era is hated because Brundle is a very petty and bitter man, and because of that Schumacher avoided the British media and acted very coldly towards them when he had no option but to interact with them. Germans and Italians got to see a very different man, and it was only when he came back and it was more of a professional TV show did we get to see more of his personality and people went "oh he's chilled out a lot hasn't he", no not really he's just not avoiding Brundle's camera man anymore. We bitch about Sky a hell of a lot but during the Schumacher era the show was absolutely dire, you would get very little build up with maybe four bitter journalists standing around doing a even more dull version of Ted's notebook for a bit, possibly an interview with a British driver or someone from a British team and that was it.

iospace posted:Also, question, where would Ferrari be today if they didn't get Schumi? Personal theory: Out of the sport. Schumacher, Brawn & Todt pulled them out of their nadir by sheer force of will. Without any of those three, it wouldn't have happened. They'd not like the pr of being an also-ran midfield team in that era much longer. Come to think of it, unless massive change comes down I can't see them competing past 2018. learnincurve posted:Without Schumacher development would have stalled. Honestly Brundle has never been hostile towards Schumacher. The OMG ENGLAND ENGLAND thing came around in the years after his original retirement. A lot of the British media were anti-schumi (or at least traded well on things he did bad) but not the walker/brundle team or in the immediate years after. In fact the endless praises get a bit OTT if you go back and watch late-90s F1. Brundle has morphed into his current grumpy Brit-man form since working with Sky. e: he was actually an almost solitary voice in '99 who said Schumacher should come back; the media in general had completely written him off which is why you get that bizarre Malaysian GP where Schumacher burns away for 2 laps (just to show he has pace) then plays #2 to Irvine. Has Ferrari ever been "midfield"? The only season I've seen where that was the case was 1980.

If Brundle was bitter about Schumacher it wouldn't have been because of his nationality, but because there were rumours that he pushed him out of Benetton.

Lots of people pretending they can't here the phone this morning then. I'm going to make a wild punt and say he's going to try and get a classic F1 car race series going, but they already exist*, and for practical reasons they are all supplied by Cosworth, who are making tiny hopeful noises about coming back to formula 1. *Always funny to watch Senna's McLaren go round Donnington to maybe a hundred people eating bacon sandwiches going "If the F1 still made noise like that it would be saved!" Yeh pall I'm overwhelmed by the heaving throngs which have turned up today.

I would wonder if Bernie is about to get hit with a massive lawsuit from the teams for breaking his side of the concord agreement that covers promotion and marketing. We know Bernie's good but I would imagine he was relying on the fact that he would be dead before anyone found him out.

That's it, THERE's his game. Pull out of F1 just when he's pushed it right to the edge of the cliff, and then start a new series that he owns fully to nudge it over. More ruthless track deals, more ruthless profiteering, and he will run it that way for another 40 years.
