Captain's log, Day 3, Tzenkethi Preservation Front. Things not going well. Federation aggressors increasingly adapting effective anti-Tzenki tactics. Betrayed by Cryptic, expected game-breaking bug to remain extant at least three more months based on past indicators. Occasional victories when involuntary gravitational fleet formations reach critical mass, however impeded by crippling performance issues on simulation platform due to massively unoptimized stellar phenomena effects. Visual report attached.

I remember having a great old time in the classic Khitomer Elite queues TBR'ing Donatra all over the map while my team screamed obscenities at me because they were out of range.
Saying "Try to keep up!" or "Why aren't you helping?" was like pouring high octane fuel on a wood fire.

For the record you can actually reach the planet on that map but it takes a while even impulse bursting. Which you will be doing while you TBR Donatra of course.
(or would be doing if those borg queues weren't nearly as dead as the dino mothership attack STF)

I got my grav gens up to 649 now.

I might be able to get them like 5-10 higher if I epic'd some UR stuff but that's about the absolute max you can get as far as I know.

Even with the original STFs you've got clouds of probes, spheres, and what have you spawning in and the guy with your same exact build running DBB/Omni FAW instead of cannons will help with all that too instead of being dead weight until the boss comes along.

Too true. I love running cannons on my bugship, but I'm under no illusions on it, the FAW method of problem solving is much better.

The problem with dual cannons is they're supposed to be this big pewpew things on ships that are supposed to swoop around and be cool like the defiant, while beams are for lumbering whales like the cruisers. The problem is that literally nothing in the game design actually supports this. The limited firing arc means that the idea way to use cannons is to sit and turret, while the most mobile ships in the games are the ones that use broadside beams and can just keep the throttle at max at all times and circle around stuff.

And there's no... real way to solve this. They kind of had an opportunity to make escorts more useful with stuff like the pilot escort abilities or lock trajectory or whatever, but instead of making that universal abilities for the class they stuck them on specific ships or locked them behind specialist bridge officer skills. And even if they were universal, you'd still be better off with beams since you'd still have the original mobility advantages too. It's basically unsolveable without completely redesigning space combat from the ground up. Or nerfing beams into the ground or something. :effort:

DHC get an innate CrtD bonus, but that alone is not nearly enough to make up for the high opportunity cost. Beams just easily bridge the gap by always firing.

That said, DHCs are the obvious choice for that decloaking, flanking, surgical alpha strike where you poo poo out a quarter million damage in one volley, but PVP is such a joke you can get by with a sloppy beam build and still pop anyone in a couple seconds without bothering with all that fancy piloting.

There's other issues too. All the cannon boff abilities are one rank higher than the beam ones, so it's simply harder to fit crf3 or csv3 on a ship than it is to get bfaw3. The damage falloff used to be brutal on cannons, but at least they've fixed that. Honestly, they should just remove the restrictive firing arc on cannons. Sailing ships that used cannons could certainly broadside with them, so it shouldn't be immersion-breaking to let space ships do it too.

When CSV or CRF is active, the CrtD bonus on DHCs is removed for the same reason crit bonuses from accuracy overflow are removed when FAW is active: failing to understand or maintain their own scripting language.

Just read that the trait from the NX refit (While this trait is slotted activating Beam: Fire at Will or Cannon: Scatter Volley will cause Beam: Overload and Cannon: Rapid Fire to do 50% additional damage for the next 30 seconds) will work with [over] modded beams, which seems absolutely hilarious and worth trying.

I can think of several ways to encourage Defiant-style strafing run cannon play but they all hinge on it also being more defensively beneficial to swoop around than to just sit there and be a warp-capable phaser turret, i.e.

Really ships should have the firing arcs, not weapons. Putting duals on a giant-rear end cruiser and getting the same arc as a zippy escort is pretty :downs:

Weird, I taught a boff beam overload iii but it's completely unusable, grayed out and doesn't appear in Available Skills at all:



Same skill on another boff in the same station works fine. Tried restarting/changing maps/reslotting/training another skill/etc. Am I going to have to space poor ole Rokol? :ohdear:

I was on a Star Trek binge for the latter half of January, remembered I had played this game in its open beta yonks ago, and decided to try it out again since it was F2P. Coincidentally, I managed to rejoin on a double XP weekend and managed to level up pretty dang quickly; I enjoyed myself enough puttering through all the little missions and still am enjoying myself with it. Now I'm slowly trudging my way through the mid-50's, and I have to wonder, how do you guys get the literal millions of EC required to buy anything on the Exchange? I've been barely buying anything and recycling all the poo poo items I get and I only have like 750~k. Is it because of the Duty Officer/Admiralty/R&D stuff? I've hardly touched them.

In short: Get a big pile of money, pay attention to the exchange, exploit any opportunity to make your pile bigger. You can farm omega particles right now with the anniversary event running and get a good start on your pile. Do admiralty and level your R&D it's very little extra effort to do.

There's alot of other stuff you can do but it's long term effort to get a snowball rolling stuff so it might not be right for you if you just want to shoot some stuff and peace out again. You really don't need a lot of expensive poo poo to just run the content.

Yeah apparently it was an oversight, according to the devs. I give it 50/50 odds on either being lovely coding with no playtesting as usual, or a change they thought they could sneak through and then quickly walked back when people complained. Considering Cryptic it's probably the former.

The queues are probably still better sources of protomatter mark things though, if only because the battlezone takes ages with pubs.

Couple quick no effort small cost things to get started so you have the EC to move on to bigger things:

- Look for training manuals on the exchange for skills that are popular, find one that doesn't have much supply at the moment, then R&D a couple of those and throw them up. Main material cost are PADDs, you can make them with dil or just buy them off the exchange for like 80k EC. You can sell the manuals for like 200k-400k. Don't make a ton of the same ones because you will get undercut, make your money then move onto another manual afterwards.

- Even easier, buy skills from the trainer and sell those on the exchange. Popular ones sell for like 50k and cost you 2k.

These only work because in the end the amount of profit you make is a pittance compared to what you could earn, so move on to better things like high level R&D and playing the exchange once you've got a bit of EC built up to do so comfortably.

Just farm a shitload of omega particles; they're worth a good chunk of change and if you have any left over you can get high on your own supply during the next 2x R&D weekend.

City of Heroes kind of underperformed (partly due to unrealistic expectations from NCSoft) and Champions Online was basically DOA (because Atari was laughably incompetent). DCUO was alright I guess? But I think also underperformed and is kind of in maintenance mode as well, if not as severely as ChampO.

Considering there's never been an actual big breakout hit superhero MMO, considering how expensive MMO development is, and the genre is basically dying now that game companies have figured making a lovely MOBA or mobile game gets them the same amount of money for a fraction of the effort, it's not really a surprise there's no new superhero games in development. Still a goddamn shame though, and something that came about mostly through company politics and random chance.

Has a fanatically loyal player base because of the license and it probably prints money because they convinced people that spending $50 on a reskinned spaceship with slightly different stats counts as significant content.

As far as goons go, far less active than historically but there always some playing. Enough to form queue groups even.

Just be aware that PWE is a Chinese MMO publisher and set your freemium expectations accordingly.

To be perfectly honest, the game is completely playable if you're F2P. There's no real content you can't do, and you can basically level from the start to the level cap with whatever trash you find along the way and the crappy ships they give you. It's also probably one of the most unique MMOs on the market, for better or worse; there's none that give you the same sort of customization options and none a the moment that offer anything like the ship combat.

With that said, the cash shop and gamble box bullshit is strong in this game, and you're definitely going to be behind the curve without a current top-tier ship (although they occasionally do a giveaway grind for one during summer and winter, and one going on right now for the anniversary) and almost all the fun new "toys" come from the gamble boxes or people selling the drops on the in-game auction house. It's also got a bunch of really janky code, a somewhat clunky UI, and the first 10-20 levels are kind of super slow paced. As long as you avoid diving into the absurd cash shop crap though it's probably one of the better F2P MMOs on the market, for whatever that's worth.
