If you're mad about not running the ball just consider that Ryan was routinely snapping the ball with 15 to 20 left on the play clock, and a running game clock, all the way through the second half. There were extra minutes at the end of the game that shouldn't have been there.

There were lots of gently caress ups. But it's Atlanta. Would you really expect anything else? No.

Well, to be fair, to even get into the position they were in required a good number of fuckups from the Patriots in the first half. Neither team played a particularly clean game, but the Patriots were better at the end, when it mattered.

To bring this back to college football, last night just had me wishing for college overtime rules. We almost had overtime in the NCG if it wasn't for Deshaun Watson being a boss, and Alabama having no idea how to cover a rub route. Guarantee that the college version would have been a more incredible ending than the NFL version.

College overtime rules are superior because you may as well just flip a coin and whoever wins the toss wins the game for the NFL. Whereas with college both teams get a chance to score/keep things going. Sudden death in football is stupid.

I'd be a fan of college OT rules but a start on the 35 that way if you couldn't move the ball at all it would be a 45-50+ yard FG attempt rather than a 35-40 yard attempt, which is a lot more of a gimme in the pros.

Yup. 35 or 40 yard line. The stubborn NFL fans are lying to themselves if they think that OT period last night was better than Tom Brady and Matt Ryan trading blows from the 35. All I'm hearing are excuses for terrible football ("Falcons should have run more" or "Falcons had the ball in the 4th quarter"). They've deluded themselves.

The Falcons previous four drives resulted in no points and two of them ended in negative yards. This is not an endorsement of NFL overtime rules, but that game was over as soon as it went to overtime because the Falcons offense was going in reverse and their defense was done. Wouldn't have mattered what the rules were.

There's really not any good way to do overtime in football period, which is why it really should just be a postseason only thing regardless of what rules they arrive at.

The Super Bowl reminded me a lot of the national championship game in that regard. If Bama had run the ball a few more times and avoided repeatedly going three-and-out in a nanosecond on some of their late drives, there's probably not enough time left on the clock for Clemson. As it was, Bama and Atlanta kept their defenses out on the field far too long, and despite excellent first-half performances, they couldn't help but wilt at some point.
