Wait--like, the US exported the concept of blackface/yellowface? Nobody in Europe thought of putting makeup on their face and dressing up as a caricature before Americans did it? That's fascinating, I didn't know that.

There was Black Peter, Saint Nick's little helper. I always thought it was because he had soot from chimney-scampering, but apparently it's a Moor caricature.

I was just in the supermarket buying stuff to cook for lunch. I was waiting in a long line, since they had decided to close the usual six registers and have two open while the other clerks were limply wiping down the register-number signs. There's an older guy standing in front of me, and he keeps turning around to look me up and down, as well as stare at what's in my basket. This is normal for China, as they have nooooo idea what the barbarians consider food or even if they know what cooking is, since Chinese food is the only true food. He's being annoying, and his breath stinks, but I am stuck. The woman behind me sighs very loudly and grabs a nearby empty shopping cart, throwing her heavy items in so she doesn't have to hold them. It was a small package of tofu, and a bag of about 50 dumpling wrappers. She pushed this cart for the duration of my time in line. I was finally able to put my items on the counter at the register, and now the dork in front of me immediately perks up and starts touching my items like he's never seen any of these crazy things before. Corn! Ginger! Beans! Bread rolls! Oh, poo poo, an onion! He is especially shocked at the bread rolls and starts poking his fingers into them like they are some mystical apparition come from beyond. I tell him to stop that, and he turns and stares at me like he is even more surprised now that it actually speaks and is sentient. I couldn't tell if he was really that stupid, or just wanted to be an rear end in a top hat, but I feel it was a mixture of both. His breath made me want to gag. He then backed away, paid attention to the cashier (who was asking him to pay), and left after looking me up and down one more time. I live in an area with a high volume of foreigners of all colors and sizes, so my appearance is not something out of the ordinary around here. Kill the old.

That's fascinating, I didn't know that. No, Europeans did and still do it all the time, the concept that it's incredibly racist is something where the US is at the forefront though. Like, when you see someone in Germany running around in blackface (like for fashing) the most liberal people will also say it's incredibly racist, but even generally very liberal people will mostly just kinda scoff at it. "That's a bit distasteful". It simply isn't the same level of scandal in many parts of europe. I was Spain for 3 Kings festival (the three holy kings from the bible are way more popular than santa in spain, and the big present festival is 8th of january instead of christmas) and the amount of blackface balthazhars is still staggering. Often with blackface helpers, or real african helpers. A couple of generally liberal spanish people I asked told me "yeah well it's a bit racist, but it's not so bad and it's kinda tradition".

Purpleface is the most racist because it really diminishes the struggle that Grimaces face in our society. Of course, not all Grimaces live below the poverty line and do meth, but they tend to be ostracized in their own communities- "Uncle Fries," I believe they're called. Truly heartbreaking to see an ethnic group turn against itself like that.

you people are kind of dumb and american-centric the reason why blackface is so offensive in the US is not because dressing up as a charicature is offensive (its not), but because of your deep and troubled history with minstrels shows and the way they legitimised slavery the rest of the world didnt have the same kind of slavery as you, so blackface is not aasssss problematic in these places (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Many Indians are really bad/dumb about seeing non-brown Indians. People in Northeast India are very commonly asked if they are Chinese or Japanese. For some reason, Korean dramas got super popular there and many young people got into dressing in Korean fashion, hair, make up, etc., which really doesn't help that. I used to work around a ton of people from Darjeeling area, which is in northern West Bengal. Though have their own language, they can speak/read/write Bengali as its the state language and taught in schools. They would go down to Kolkata for work or university and get really pissed off at everyone asking if they come from Thailand or China and treating them like they are foreign or exotic. I remember it was even included in a Shah Rukh Khan movie because it was so common (the characters were asked if they were Chinese). I can go find pictures of these people, I just need to search on social media. I'll post them soon. big time bisexual posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kx6-NzLpf0

Here are the Northeastern Indians that are constantly called "Chinese" by brown Indians. Some are Christian, but most follow some Hindu sect. I would also like to add that even I (let alone Indians) are a little surprised to hear them speaking some major dialect because the audio-visual component doesn't match up (a little bit like the shock a Chinese would have seeing non-Chinese speaking a local dialect). BONUS CHUCKLE:
