Skinty McEdger posted:May's argument that she couldn't possibly allow the commons or Lords a veto on the terms of Brexit, because this may give the EU incentive to give the UK a bad deal, begs the question: then what the gently caress will the vote she promised at the end of the negotiations actually gong to be about? A choice between a) accepting whatever she's managed to agree or b) just leaving without whatever she's agreed, ie WTO rules which aren't really in anyone's interests . So really no choice at all, because any MP who refuses to vote for the deal in this context would look like a prat. She's trying to avoid giving Parliament any real choices, eg "keep on negotiating and don't leave until we get a better deal" or "hold a referendum on the deal"

Fangz posted:"Do [incredibly difficult thing first] before we even discuss [thing that we came to talk about]" is a terribly obnoxious argument. If you're not allowed to talk about the actual causes of a problem when someone is blaming things on immigration or massive loving televisions or meow meow or whatever the panic du jour is (apparently cartoon children in that guy's case) just because the actual causes are complex or hard to implement in the current climate then you effectively cede the debate. Then you end up with stuff like the Overton window in the gutter press being "is the NHS hosed because of immigrants or fat people?" because getting Tories to fund things is hard.

Guavanaut posted:Not as obnoxious as "ban [x] because I don't like it and have decided it's the cause of a problem" as arguments go though. Especially when there is no good evidence that the thing in question causes said issues. Yeah but I imagine when you're a British journalist in Japan to have an interview with a creator about anime culture the point is not for you to lay out an overall strategy to Fix Society and fully justify British values, it's to ask questions that tease out those cultural differences between Japan and the UK. "But but poverty" is just a transparent dodge.

I've considered anime as an art form objectively over the years and tbh it does seem to have a tiny bit of raping and young girls and stuff. Just saying.

I've managed to not see any of that either. Like I get it, there are lots of lovely animes out there. It doesn't stop One punch man being the best brainless fun of last year, or stop LOGH from being the best sci fi epic ever told in visual media. Everyone agrees generalisation is bad. Until we get to anime in which case it's fine and if you watched Trigun you should be put on a watchlist.
