Unabashed bootlickers like Payne and Branco would go down in future history books as spineless worms if their work had any artistic skill or merit whatsoever.

And that is the best thing about them, that nobody will remember them or care about their life's work the second they are dead.

I feel like if Sean Hannity, or Glenn Beck, or some such person happened to be reading this thread, then when they read this they would be traumatized into spending millions of dollars on a time capsule full of lovely political cartoons.

Ramirez cartoons going back to at least 2001 are on cagle.com, but I'm not sure if it's possible to browse them easily. The second cartoon is from August 2, 2003 and has the relatively intuitive URL http://cdn.cagle.com/working/030802/ramirez.gif.

This makes me sad because there's comments on there from people who are deviantart members and aren't used to how terrible some people are, especially on the wider internet, so they're like "Hey this is kind of insulting to jewish people", like they don't understand that someone would be happy to offend jews.

...While it is commonly attributed to Queen Marie Antoinette, there is no record of this phrase ever having been said by her. It appears in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions, his autobiography (whose first six books were written in 1765, when Marie Antoinette was nine years of age, and published in 1782)
[...]
The attribution also has little credibility. Fraser cites as justification for the alternative attribution to the wife of Louis XIV the memoirs of Louis XVIII, who was only fourteen when Rousseau's Confessions were written and whose own memoirs were published much later. He does not mention Marie-Antoinette in his account, but states that the saying was an old legend and that within the family it was always believed that the saying belonged to the Spanish princess who married Louis XIV in the 1660s. Thus, Louis XVIII is as likely as others to have had his recollection affected by the quick spreading and distorting of Rousseau's original remark.
[...]
Fraser points out in her biography that Marie-Antoinette was a generous patroness of charity and moved by the plight of the poor when it was brought to her attention, thus making the statement out-of-character for her. This makes it unlikely that Marie-Antoinette ever said this.

Don't forget about her depraved orgies, constant cheating on the King with ministers / aristocrats / court favorites, and the fact that the royal heirs were all bastards.

...

With the sole addition of Rasputin, this was all copy-pasted for Alexandra Fedorovna. People aren't exceptionally original when it comes to (female) royal libels.

Yeah. Considering she wasn't particularly liked even before the Estates General and went out of her way to be as antagonistic as possible toward the nascent Republic, up to and including begging her Habsburg relations to invade and occupy the country, it's a depressing commentary on how women's imagined sexuality continues to be a more potent tool to slag on them than, you know, anything they actually really do.

This "quote" has actually come up a bunch and I've yet to see it used correctly. "Let them eat cake" was a response to "The people have no bread" and shows how out of touch Marie was with the people: she assumed the poorest in her country were like her, that they were simply out of bread but had plenty of everything else. Every comic so far has used it as a punishment: let them eat ONLY bread" which misses the point. It also misses the point that, compared to Trump, even the fictional "rich, hated the poors" Marie was a loving saint compared to the real "poors have it better than me" Trump

One thing I read a long time ago (possibly in the Straight Dope, take it for what that's worth) is that "cake" could have been a mistranslation or a misunderstanding of the term as it was used at the time, which was to refer to crusty leftover batter; that is, she was saying the poors could just dine on scraps. Not sure if that really changes the tone of contempt and disconnectedness associated with the quote, but it's an interesting footnote.
