Stick to guns with a very short fire animation (ideally zero) so you can activate a power at a moment's notice to save your rear end from death. Don't worry about watching other people's health unless you genuinely care. Compression pistols are tip top. Now I use the advanced fleet armor recommended to me by another goon for the +80% crit damage but if you want to never ever die get the armor from the Voth ground set (just the armor, the rest is trash) and crouch a lot. You'll see what I mean. Oh and use the omega rep ground shield for the free dodge. Weapons are entirely your choice but I really do recommend compression pistols in general because they're great. God drat do I want the Federation version of that new starbase sized ship. I've dropped like 4K zen from my stipend I had left over on the packs and i've gotten nothing except for a poo poo ton of Lobi and a ton of super rare crafting materials that are probably gently caress all on the exchange. The worst part is that I wouldn't have even done that if it existed on the exchange. As soon as one gets put up on there it gets bought by some rear end in a top hat wanting to flip ships for like 500% it's current price once the event is over. I'm not nearly enough of a sperglord about this game to have that much in game cash. It's got my favorite feature from the old pre-revamp/tier 6 ships in it. IE: The giant gently caress off doom laser you can periodically fire at things to just annihilate them. Plus it has two hangars, and a full complement of weapon slots like non-hangar DPS focused ships do. Plus it's huge as hell. It's like the SUV of Enterprise's. Aside from it's terrible speed, slightly sub-optimal BOFF seating, and really low turn rate it's basically perfect for me and the only ship i'd likely ever want even if it isn't tip top tier like some other ships are. What are the odds that it'll come back later? I need it. It's my final boss for this lovely space game. Archonex fucked around with this message at 13:34 on Mar 19, 2017 |

Trading Channels exist for a reason, and you'll notice that the people advertising the things for a bil and a half never sell, because all of the actual transactions happening are in the 800 mil - 1 bil range. You pissed your 4k zen into the wind. If you didn't know already you have about a 1/200 chance of getting a lockbox ship per box and it's worse for the special promo ships. That's why people trade them for hundreds of real dollars worth of keys. A few pages ago I commented on a screenshot of those ships together outside spacedock being worth a total value of about five thousand dollars. That number wasn't a joke.

You don't seem to realize how much these ships are going for. Or how little I play this game these days. I've seen them go up for hundreds of millions of credits. The last few that went up on the market went for 600 million to in one case 900 million. And that's before you factor in that there's going to most likely be a price jump once the event is over and they start trickling onto the market over the next few months. Fact of the matter is that four thousand zen was not going to be enough to get one of them by flipping keys. I also don't play this game nearly often enough any more to ever get that many credits otherwise. On top of that when i've checked for them they usually simply aren't purchasable. There are apparently some turbo-nerds that are buying them up in the first few minutes they go up for sale, and i'm not going to loving sit around all day hoping I can fly around in a pretend starship. So I figured I had might as well take my chances even if I knew it wasn't likely to work out in my favor. Hell, it's not a bother to me either way. I have a lifetime sub due to getting suckered into one way back before release. So blowing 4K zen is nothing. All I have to do is be patient and i'll have more eventually. Knowing my habits with the game as of late i'll probably get bored with the current content soon only to pop into the game months later to see what's new. Only to find I have more zen to blow on whatever amuses me. Archonex fucked around with this message at 14:49 on Mar 19, 2017 |

No, you didn't waste $40. You instead wasted $300 on a lifetime sub, and then blew eight months worth of the stipend of that on basically nothing because you were a sucker and fell into a gambling trap, and now are trying to defend it because you do not comprehend what an "opportunity cost" means. This does not in fact make you look better. You hosed up. You were a sucker. Own up to it, shrug, and learn a valuable life lesson.

This does not in fact make you look better. Actually, I do believe the price was $200 when I paid for it. And given how long i've played this game (I was one of the initial people posting stories about the RP community way back when, in fact.) and how many revamps the mechanics have been through a good portion of that sum probably would have trickled into the game over time over unavoidable little things like ship purchases. So I certainly don't think the money on the lifetime sub was ill spent given that i'm still getting stipends that I typically literally can't find poo poo to spend on at this point. Either way, I long ago went past the point where Cryptic would theoretically be making cash off of my lifetime sub when trying to match things up. I also explained why flipping keys gave me a literally zero percent chance of actually getting that ship in any reasonable time frame. Whereas using the points on the packs at least gave me a chance, no matter how infinitesimal that might be. I don't know, man. You seem to be getting pissy that I didn't spend the points in a way that you approve of. Even though that method would have gotten me gently caress all of anything that I actually wanted or even had left to get in this game that was of interest to me. No, 20 R&D packs (You did buy them during the sale right? Please say you did) would not have gotten you the ship by themselves. But they would have gotten you 300 to 350 million EC, which is enough to start looking at flipping things on the exchange for profit, which adds up faster than you're think. You'd still have had until April 9th to get one, giving you plenty of time to work, and based on past events, the Fed variant is going to see a price dip before it sees a price hike. You're also approaching buying one of these things the wrong way - you don't meet the price of the guy screaming that he wants 250 keys in trade chat for an hour. There's a reason he advertises for an hour, it's because he's not having any luck selling it. You put out that you want to buy at whatever price, and be pleasantly surprised at how many hits you get. You could also take the denalt trole route and start hunting down people who just opened one, hoping they don't realize what it's worth. This works more often than you'd think. Psycho Landlord posted:I think I'm the only Dental flying one. I did not get it out of a box. Yeah, given the odds i've seen posted I don't see much of a chance of many people at all ever having a shot at getting one. Even outside of packs it's probably going to be way outside the price range of anything but long time market exploiting types. Given how low the drop rate is supply is going to be short as hell once a month or so passes and the initial rush by marketeers that have been buying them up to sell afterwards is gone. Doubly so since the ship theoretically fills many of the general ship unique roles out there despite having what's apparently considered by many players to be sub-optimal BOFF seating. Which coupled with it's appearance means it's going to have a lot of people that have an interest in the game but aren't looking to min-max looking to get it. Regardless, I might be wrong about this but I don't see the price on it dropping to anything sane unless they run the event commonly or add it to an upcoming lockbox. Exploitative mmo gambling bullshit aside... How bad an idea would it be to buy the temporal agent pack that's on sale right now? Bearing in mind I was gonna buy a few ships from it anyway BUT only like 50-60$ worth and the pack is 110$ currently. It _looks_ like it'd give me all the ships i'd ever want except maybe a pilot escort (which seem kind of fun but not really essential). Plus all the TOS stuff, costumes, and random poo poo. But are they actually decent ships? Not best in class or anything just decent enough to be worth it? Basically if they are any good I wouldn't have to spend any more actual cash on the game for months by which time i'd be bored anyway so it'd be a good deal.

I think the exchange flippers really overestimate the ability/knowledge the average goon has on how to make EC doing it. I have absolutely no idea what to flip, and it's not like sharing that knowledge would help without gutting your business. It's not super helpful to say "just flip things bing bong so simple" Edit: Also I opened a bunch of pulse phaser boxes last week and sold a DMG x 3 array of them. Hey bud it's your stipend, spend it on whatever you want. I got at least 3 ships from lockboxes in my time with STO and I have likely opened fewer than 40 lockboxes in the life of the game, 3 or 4 once a year when I have some extra whatever to blow. The folly is in not getting the thing from the lockbox you opened on a whim and then telling others about it. Cause then they're gonna laugh at you for caring about the game they still play long into its 4th death.

The promotional boxes are the worst way to convert resources into ships. Anecdotes are not data, but allow me to share one. Lo those many years ago, they ran a promo for bugships and buffed the drop rate. I decided to waste 3 billion EC to see how well those boxes worked. The return was about a fifth of the number of bugships I could have bought straight-out with that EC. I do not imagine that it is any better today.

Opening promo packs and/or lockboxes does have a place though - if you specifically want lobi to buy something that can't be traded between players. Like the Boolian cannon or whatever else you might want off the lobi store. Just be aware of what is and isn't tradable though because you might find it on the exchange for cheaper overall.
