Also remember the Pacific has gotten a lot better this season. Maybe they'll compete as a bubble team.

The NHL needs to do something, because if Vegas aren't any good from pretty much the get go they're going to get left in the dust when the NFL comes to town. The Raiders will arrive in three years, time with a fully fleshed out roster. Expansion teams since 1991 (the Sharks) have averaged 57pts in their first season, 56pts in their 2nd season and 68pts in their third. It takes them an average of 4.77 years to make the playoffs for the first time. If the Knights don't get going quickly, fan interest is going to vanish and the NFL is going to take all those eyeballs (I mean it will anyways, but 100%, not just 98%). The NHL has a really bad track record with expansion teams, they probably need to do something drastic to make Vegas a viable franchise. Then again the owners got their $500M of money they don't have to share with the players, so they don't actually care. I think this fear, which I've seen a bit since the Raiders thing was announced, is a little unfounded. The NFL and the NHL aren't really direct competitors for viewers. Will the Raiders be more popular? Definitely. They also only play once a week, and typically during the day. Most weeks there are going to be 2-4 nights when the only pro team in action is the Knights, so I don't think Vegas fans will abandon the hockey team as soon as the Raiders come to town. If Vegas was getting a NBA team I'd be a lot more worried about it, since the nature of the NBA and NHL schedules puts them in direct competition with each other moreso than football. ThinkTank posted:That's not saying much when you're in a division with Arizona and Vancouver. yeah I guess that's true. They could end up with Nolan Patrick or Nico Hischier too if they're lucky.

Vegas is untested waters for sports teams. Guarantee there will be tie-ins with the casinos and they'll get at least some asses in seats that way. City population is only 600,000, and they bring in 40 million visitors a year. Compare to Chicago.. 9.4 million, 51 million visitors a year. The transient population of Las Vegas is absurd.

Well sure, there are only 600k people in the city of Las Vegas itself, but the metro area in total is quite a bit larger. I want to say at it's least 2 million people, so on par with cities like Pittsburgh, Columbus, San Jose, or Nashville, with the added bonus of millions and millions of tourists.

You can protect far fewer players now than you could in 1992, and people nearer the start of their careers are exempt. I remember being annoyed that some team with a pile of great goalies traded for some schmo just so they could expose him, but it really didn't matter because the rest of that team was horrifyingly bad anyway.

None of them had anything about salary rules since it's all pre-cap. In 1991 they could protect 2 goalies and 16 players. 92 was 2 goalies and 14 players. In 99 it was 1 goalie, 5 defense and 9 forwards or 2 goalies, 3 defense and 7 forwards. Atlanta just got luckier? Those still only gave them the bottom defenseman and 4th line. Teams could protect 16 skaters and 2 goaltenders in 91 and 14 skaters and 2 goalies in 92, so those teams were made up of literal garbage scraps. Even with just 14 players protected, that means that the best players available were 3rd pairing defencemen, 4th liners or third string goalies.

Casinos will definitely be comping people to hockey games. There was talk on a sports radio show in Columbus yesterday about how the NFL will work in Vegas and one suggestion was road trips for fans. The example they used was a Browns fan wanting to see the Browns in December, but tying it into a trip to Las Vegas. I could definitely see a Florida/Tampa-style number of visiting NHL jerseys at Golden Knights games for the same reason, especially with fans who travel well and in numbers. e- How easy will it be for visiting fans? With new Delta service to Orange County starting in April, Las Vegas has non-stop air service to every NHL city except Ottawa, and some of them have more than one airline operating the route (i.e., Columbus-Las Vegas on Frontier and Southwest): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarran_International_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations CBJSprague24 fucked around with this message at 15:56 on Mar 28, 2017 |

I mean, obviously, he's not a McDavid type who can just carry an offense by himself, but is there any evidence he could come close to deserving his salary as a secondary player on a team with a better system and support? $5.5M just doesn't seem AWFUL for a guy with a ~60 point ceiling. Tickets between Chicago and Las Vegas are easy to get at $100, $100 for a room, and $50 for a car.. that's less than getting decent 200 level seats to a Chicago home game. If I wanted to sit on the glass? It makes huge sense to spend a weekend in Vegas. So yeah the Knights should do just drat fine in terms of ticket sales.

A sizeable contingent of Jets fans seem to think they'll protect Lowry over Perreault in the expansion draft because 'Lowry is 6'5' which pretty conveniently leaves out the fact that 6'5 Adam Lowry is a far worse hockey player than 5'10 Matthieu Perreault. Perreault is on fire lately and his advanced statistics indicate he's a legitimate top line winger. I'll be so loving pissed if we gift him to Vegas.

Lowry is also 5 years younger and hardly some no talent hack. I'm all for advocating skill over size, but Perreault is a decent but unspectacular top six option while Lowry is a good, defensive third liner who provides a modicum of offence when needed. The Jets have a bunch of skilled guys, they're lacking depth. I'd still choose Perreault all things considered, but it's hardly a terrible option to pick Lowry over him.
