My favourite part of that is encountering the near-fatal attack only happens if you go for a crappy shiny item. You just dismiss it as being a one off trap spell or something similar, at least until later.

I'd be interested in more examples as well, I can't think of anything specific off the top of my head. Anytime you're being watched without being aware of it until you find the camera/peephole is creepy but that's normally more of a narrative threat than a gameplay one.

I get a lot of similar vibes when I am watching someone play a game and I see a thing that they don't see. I was watching harshlycritical/John play through a game recently called "girl's fabric face" and the game wasn't stellar or anything, but there was a point where he was exiting into a room and saying "annnnnnd there's gonna be a jumpscare now" while anticipating a loud noise and spooky monster appearance and stuff, but nothing happened so he was all "oh I guess not" even though there was a ghost in the back that ended up fading through a wall once he entered the room. He just hadn't noticed.

I fuckin love poo poo like that. Obviously it isn't something you can build an entire game around, but the idea that you were in danger the entire time (or the illusion of danger) without knowing it is tense. I think P.T. had some similar stuff where not everyone realized when Lisa was possessing them so they had no clue that at any point if they turned around, they'd get another jump scare.

e: that shin megami tensei creepypasta with the "TURN IT OFF" thing hits the same kinda tone for me. Or playing Ecco the Dolphin and loving around with the password screen and finding out that the cutesy little dolphin game has a password that is just "NNNNNNNN" that takes you to the second to last level where you're in a horrible machine with creepy music and xenomorphs flying at you. Something about being thrust directly into danger or finding out that your safe space is no longer safe (or perhaps was never safe to begin with) is great.

I don't think 4's faults stem from the way it handled the room itself.

Another instance is when you're playing a non-scary game but it just has something spooky in it for whatever reason. Like when I was playing the sims 1 as a kid and I found out about ghosts, or when I saw some vids of the ghost in super mario 3d land.

I didn't mind that too much since the return trips are all super truncated versions of the first time through the levels. I really detest the stupid invincible ghosts though. If I'm going to be damaged in a video game, I at least want the enemy to *hit* me to damage me, don't eat my health by merely being around.

The second pathway is kind of neat at least, iirc the first tour is through the wall holes but the second tour is one long path through the levels facilitated by a series of magic connecting staircases with weird museum displays on the side like giant sheep

Also Rule of Rose is drat good in spite of its gameplay flaws and everyone should find some way to play it. One of the rare games too where I don't think watching a Let's Play or whatever would have the same effect, it's all about the immersion.

I watched John Wolfe (formerly Harshly Critical) play the first part in VR and there's a weird field of view narrowing that keeps happening. I love the deep sea so the opportunity to be down there in a semi-realistic environment is both exciting and claustrophobic (the player is wearing a huge high-tech deep dive suit, finding and properly using oxygen is a mechanic).

I'm assuming based on the title there's a "is it a hallucination or real?" plot and hoping that plays out. From what I watched in the first part I'd rather have a deep sea horror game based on actual dangers than "oh no spooky haunted oil rig."

Wolfe uploaded more Narcosis and it's solidified my want of the game. Some people will probably find it too slow, but it adds to the suspense - which I think is a better description than "horror," although what the player is experiencing - living through what thus far appears to be a natural disaster (seaquake?) while in the most unforgiving environment on Earth and discovering dead crew mates, recovering their IDs which unlock photos and brief histories, and hallucinating on top of it all - is horrifying.

I'm sure the tech and the animal behavior is unrealistic to a degree, but I think it's just plausible enough to pull most players in.

yeah, I was kind of including that, those two areas sort of blur together in my head. The mansion was creepier though you're right, and then you meet a hilarious turd man in the basement and it's all a bit silly, but hey, Vampire.

Yeah but that scenario leads to the absolute worst part of that game and confirms that no sewer level is fun.

What's with the eh... bretonnian dance, sir?

Really what makes me sad about the sewer in Bloodlines is that they could/should have made it spooky, read some of the clan books and junk for oWoD vampire and it talks about nosferatu having the tunnels to their hangouts all messed up and trapped and stuff like that, unless you're one of them they wanna scare your rear end off or kill you, that or at best make you really swim through that sewage and grime to find their club.

It's even remarked in one that they especially enjoy the latter when it's someone like a toreador or ventrue. :allears:

The dumb thing is that the end of the sewer section you get to the Nosferatu warrens which is infinitely more detailed and unique. All they needed to do was make it bigger in the same style.

al-azad
May 28, 2009

I would argue they ran out of money around there but there's still a lot of unique content around that part. I'm pretty convinced they went back to the game after it was finished and decided it needed to be padded so here's a dungeon that's a linear maze of similar hallways filled with dozens of super powerful enemies you can't possibly defeat.

And the monsters are really cool and gross looking. This would've made a great section if you fought maybe one of those things as a sort of level boss.
