The speech thing more or less feels like a thing that's a legit reason to be upset about running headlong into the context that a black politician is going to be held to a much higher standard of conduct than a white politician. Case in point Bernie Sanders who is apparently utterly beyond reproach as Americas anointed socialist savior in spite of some stuff that really should be inviting more criticism.

Not to mention the leftists I know and listen to readily admit that Sanders is a flawed candidate.

Usually when I see criticism of Sanders it tends to be met with a lot of aggressive handwaving or pointing how much worse [democrat] is. Likewise with criticism of some of the people he's associated with coughgabbardcough. On the other hand the circles of poc I'm around tend to have a healthy skepticism with their support. And yeah, to be perfectly fair the BDS statement is a thing I've seen a lot of people go "okay what the gently caress?" to.

The problem is that giving the kinds of speeches to Wall Street firms that they pay you $400,000 for isn't really the kind of thing progressive heroes are supposed to do. It's not that he should have given the speech for free, it's more the fact they offered him that kind of money for the speech at all suggests a certain kind of relationship between them, and the fact that he said yes suggests he agrees. (the right thing to do would have been to not give the speech, but donating the proceeds would have at least emphasized that nothing untoward was going on) loquacius fucked around with this message at 12:25 on May 2, 2017 |

And again I don't think he should have turned down the money, I think he should have turned down the speech

I thought Trevor Noah was just one outlier, but seeing a bunch of goons defend a president taking 6-figure bribes from Wall Street is truly mind-blowing. Like I know Obama has a massively inflated image as a "progressive", but I thought people would still be receptive to proof to the contrary. But don't feel bad, Donald Trump will take bribes all over the place and then you'll start seeing some real money!" -- a real thing a person might say e: "Those Wall Street types are an inspiration to me! Paying their 'employee' Barack Obama so generously... y'know what? Full-coverage health insurance for everybody!" -- another real thing which honest-to-God real business owners are even now saying constantly
