Four door, sedan, coupe or hatchback, less than 5 years old, $15,000-$22,000, heat/AC, power doors/windows/locks, aux input. Back up camera and heated seats are nice, but not necessary. I've driven the Mazda 3 (I didn't like the console layout, and the automatic transmission was really noticeably sluggish on the one I drove) and the Accord (no complaints, but more expensive.)

Thinking about getting the Accord Sport, which has been about the same price as the LX, for the higher trim driver's seat and seeing if I can remove the spoiler and skirt pieces.

I really just want a daily driver that gets good gas mileage and has low total cost of ownership, but isn't scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of build quality or interior trim, since I do a lot of long weekend trips to visit family.

I bought a 2002 Focus new, drove it for 137,000 miles over about 10.5 years before selling it to a neighbor. It was still getting the window-sticker mpg, and I'd spent less than $500 total in repairs.

Edit: Don't buy a car right now, wait a couple of months. MY2018 is about to kick off, and all those 2017s will suddenly become a liability for the dealer. Not as bad as they will be in December, but I'm guessing you don't want to wait that long. June/July-ish though...sales will fire up.

This is the worst thing about the miata when I have the top down because I unconsciously sit higher when I've got the top down, and the top of the windshield is right where you would want to look at the traffic light if pull up to the line.

It may not be interracial, but it is black and white.
I had a new Focus back in 2004. It was a hardy little car that could zip around town no trouble. I think I put something like 100k miles on it with no problems until I sold it when I moved. Dunno how the newer ones are, but based on that one I wouldn't have a problem getting another.

I am waiting for the 2018 Subaru's to start coming out and then I'm going to trade in my 2015 Crosstrek for a new one. I'll probably lose like 7-9k in the deal, but my wife has been doing the majority of the driving on the Crosstrek. We are way out in the country with lots of dirt roads and she treats that thing like a rally car. Had to replace the windshield twice already and the warranty expired a few thousand miles ago. I figure it is just a matter of time before I need to do frontend work from the way she drives over all the rough terrain.

The new one I am taking with me to gun school in the fall so it should only get light use and I am buying a grand marquis that is in good condition real cheap from my wife's grandfather for her to drive.

It is mid 2000s, an 05 or 06 I think. Was garage kept and well maintained so I'm not too worried about the 100k miles on it. He is selling it to me for $3k so I figure even if it doesn't last too long I'm not out too much.

I only say this because Dodge recommends their police car engines from certain years to have 1500-2000 mile changes, and the crazy power they're claiming, maintenance is absolutely necessary, not optional like on some asian models.

And yeah, build quality on Dodge is questionable at best. I can dig out the pictures of all the factory-installed mud I got out of my antifreeze, or add up how much I've spent on steering wheel switches because the clocksprings are garbage and have been garbage since 2007 but instead of revising the part, Dodge just keeps using them and extending the warranty as soon as it becomes clear that prayers haven't worked yet. Oh, or how I'm just waiting for the correct check engine light to click on so I can get a new cylinder head. Hopefully it hits within the next 55k miles, while it's under the newly-extended warranty for that part.

You do know thats not a Dodge thing right? Its a motor oil thing. As in the severity of driving conditions breaks down the oil much faster.

If you drive like an rear end in a top hat in lovely hot and humid weather, you are supposed to do the same thing to your personal car.

Nice, that lines up with when I was planning on getting a Focus hatch. 5 down with a surprisingly non-enlisted credit score should make things a whole lot easier too. Only thing I'm still going back and forth on is the whole new/used thing since it'll be the first new car I've ever bought, but the relief of not having to worry about some landmine that someone conveniently forgot to mention would be super awesome.

I just do 5000 mile oil changes with Mazda oil, so when the car goes in for tire rotation and warranty service under schedule 1 maintenance i do the oil too and get it all over with.

The truck gets 4000 mile changes with a cheap synthetic oil like castrol or w/e, not as picky with the truck as i am with the car since when oil is that thin (0w20) you are talking about significant lubrication differences due to additive packages and what not. 10w30 isnt nearly as runny.

I'm aware.

It stuck out to me because Arkansas had a bunch of dodges a few years ago blowing engines because the cops didn't think it needed changed until 3k like every other car they drive.

Factory recommendations for my Kia are 7500 mile oil changes. On conventional oil. But the little 2.0L with 160hp isn't some big dodge boat anchor.

My '12 Challenger was rock solid for the 60k miles that I had it, and I just sold it recently.

I drove that thing pretty wild but in saying that I did look after it maintenance wise.

That being said, the loving dodge dealerships literally made issues with it whenever I took it in. If it went into the dealership with no issues, it came out with 2. Stupid poo poo like wrong engine oil, wildly bad wheel alignments, leaving the engine oil cap off, leaving the dipstick out, leaving the radiator cap off, leaving loose lug nuts, or lug nuts so tight you had to use a breaker bar, wrong windshield wipers for fucks sake.

After my warranty was out I did everything myself and it was smooth sailing.

The car itself was probably the best car I've ever owned, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy another one knowing I'd have to take it back to another dodge dealership.
