Discendo Vox posted:alt-right internet types keyed in on coverage of coded white supremacist language, and started promoting various innocuous things as being white supremacist symbols. The OK gesture is one of those. Note this is difficult to generally evaluate with certainty; because of the faux-ironic trolling reality-attacking approach these people use with everything, it's likely that a bunch of them, knowingly or not, do use these fake signifiers as actual white supremacist indicators. Roland Jones posted:Yeah, it started as a "trick", except other Neo-Nazis and the like started using it in complete seriousness. Once that started happening, people reported on it, then the *channers claimed victory for the success of their "trick" in getting people to think Nazis used it as a white power signal (which is exactly what was happening). That carnation on Pepe's jacket is yet another one of these loving it-is-but-it-isn't-but-it-is co-opted signifiers. Here's a good breakdown of the tactic.

boy these nazis sure are getting my goat!! i sure hope they don't try to co-opt the things that really matter to me. Like, for example, cutting off my own penis. Yes indeed, that sacred act of cutting off one's own penis. I sure hope these crafty nazis don't start doing that! yes indeed that would trigger me highly.

To be fair, penis cutting has been used to signify membership in ethnic groups, so it's not that far fetched.

Can we get them hotboxing nitrogen? See, air is like 78% nitrogen and then you've got 22% of troublesome minorities, like carbon dioxide. Cause a lot of problems. It'd be better if air was really pure, just 100% of the nitrogen master race. Breathing that pure air devoid of minority molecules is what a strong Aryan Übermensch would do. Makes sense, doesn't it?

I hate Tinsley and I hate his endless, jokeless, anti-university cartoons, but if you change "America" to "the Dean" or "the Provost" then this would be a pretty accurate depiction of the seven years that I've worked in academia.

Yeah, I could fill pages with the nuances and problems of anti-administration sentiment at universities. Often the rage is valid, but directed at the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

Discendo Vox posted:Often the rage is valid, but directed at the wrong people for the wrong reasons. That's a really excellent summary of both sides of the "faculty vs. the administration" dynamic that plagues the whole sector. It's become an "us vs. them" thing, and it gets in the way of solving any actual problems, which is frequently red tape administrivia or an inadequate distribution of resources based on faulty metrics, but is also frequently recalcitrant senior faculty refusing to adapt (and taking it out on people at the adjunct/non-titled/Assistant Professor levels).
