In all the furore over the debate, has anyone noticed that Michael Fallon has apparently promised that 'higher earners' won't face a tax rise under a Tory government?

https://twitter.com/hendopolis/status/870751698238803972

This just seems like another obviously bad move, unless all Tory voters consider themselves to be high earners. I mean how much intelligence do you need to figure out Tory plans if they will pledge not to raise taxes on high earners but they won't simply pledge not to raise taxes?

Better option: don't get a postdoc anywhere, run swiftly away from academia at the first available opportunity.

I've been doing it for 13 years and I'd seriously never recommend it to anyone. Bad hours, bad management, bad pay, absolutely atrocious job security, and this is the case in most countries you might choose. As much as I love Norway, universities are nasty there too -- recently had a friend there whose employer said 'ah yes, you've been here 4 years, we shall make you permanent, as the law requires... by giving you a 0.25FTE position with no research time! Good luck with your career!'

I mean, yeah this country is particularly bad because 2/3rds of all researchers are on fixed-term contracts, zero-hours teaching positions are proliferating, our wages have dropped like 15% since 2009, and the Tories are waging full-on war against the sector since they got in. But everywhere's pretty bad.

It's not like it would make any difference, no-one really sees that stuff. They just see the debate.

Tonight did make me wonder though, both debates so far have had 'balanced' audiences. So how much of the IRA/Trident stuff is coming from members of the public who are genuinely interested to hear Corbyn's views on the subject, and how much is just from Tory supporters who know it's the best way to damage him? Do the public actually care enough about those topics that they should dominate all his interviews or is this just a prime example of how the newspapers can set the entire agenda?

Obviously I'm inclined to think the latter. I'd be interested to see a debate sometime with an audience of entirely undecided voters, rather than one mainly composed of self-described supporters of one side or the other.

The thing people aren't realising is how much of a get-out against voting for him Corbyn just served up. All those people possibly considering Labour because their kids are eloquently arguing for him? loving lost, because 'got to keep my family safe, they'll understand one day' just overwrote housing, living standards, secure employment and every other, actually relevant, issue that their children will have to face.

100% truth here, late afternoon today I went out with my dad and my dog to a corner where local Labour people met us and we went canvassing for a few hours and I feel like a mug for doing it if Corbs is going to throw the loving election like that. How dare he take the position of the one person who can stop May and pull that shite.

Is it not the case that Brexit will probably overwrite living standards and secure employment, regardless of whether Labour or Conservative are in power? I have yet to read, here or elsewhere, a satisfactory explanation of how the currently costed Labour or Conservative manifesto pledges could be honoured in a Brexit financial climate? I believe that the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the London School of Economics have forecast that something like 160 to 250 billion pounds will have to be found by the Exchequer to ensure that the vital components of our national economy are somewhat protected from the worst effects of an exit from the Single Market and Customs Union over the next five years- neither manifesto mentions this, or indeed their own Brexit treasury forecast. I will in all probability vote Labour, now that the #LibDemFightBack has shot its round into a beanbag- but I have no confidence that a Labour Treasury will be able to subsidise the consequences of leaving the Single Market any better than a Conservative Treasury.

Even given their surge Labour will very likely be the smaller party than the Tories after the election. A hung parliament is possible, an Tory majority that is increased but not by as much as was expected is imo still the likely outcome.

The excitement comes from the exposure of the Tories and May as vile bunglers in an election intended to cement their ascendancy, and the left having their politics proved viable rather than inevitably disastrous. For Corbyn specifically, his hand will be strengthened by a good performance and if it's anywhere in the realm of close he can plausibly accuse his opponents in the party of delivering the election to the Tories by trying to undermine him for two years. They'll respond that someone else as leader would have beaten the tories, but that's a weaker argument because it changes more variables.

Not really, the other one was an actual debate where the questions were put to everyone on the panel. Most of the complaints seemed to be about the general reactions of the audience (correctly laughing at the Tories and Eddie Hitler)

This one was the leaders facing questions targeted specifically at them. It's not about the audience in general, it's about who was allowed to speak and the pre-approved questions they were allowed to direct at a single candidate. Corbyn got the greatest hits of the right-wing front pages over and over and over

I'm seeing nothing that would reverse the problems the Tory party has created when they decided to cancel respite funding because of "austerity" meaning we are all in it together or whatever bollocks they spouted while giving theselves a pay rise.

Nurse should have hit her with that as well.

Small point but current recommendation for children with Down's Syndrome is that they go to regular schools if possible as the evidence indicates it helps their development if they learn alongside typical peers. For that to happen and be effective there does need to be funding/support in place. And yet strangely despite May's claims I do not trust the Tories to deliver it.
