It seems like the BBC have reacted really poorly to people claiming they somehow biased the audience for the leaders debate.

I agree. They are doubtless already sharpening the knives, but even the most committed of them knows that Brexit is going to be a poisoned chalice. I personally see them letting/making May stay on until the Brexit negotiations are done, in order that she takes the blame for failing to achieve the fantasies that Brexiteers hold. Then one of them swoops in, blaming her for whatever unequal treaty we eventually sign, which is then treated as a fait accompli.

I'm wondering more and more what purpose the BBC actually serves. If they can't even be honest or impartial about something as simple and clear cut as this, what's the point? Better to scrap it than have such a entity masquerading as a serious, responsible and intelligent source of news. It's useless at best, and malignant at worst.

American popping in here: isn't this the kinda thing the Tories usually say? Forgive me if I'm wrong. I do research pretty regularly for my scholarly work, and BBC news articles are some of the best. The BBC has field offices in every single godforsaken corner of the globe and has reporters ready to explain the local politics with clear contextual knowledge. Stuff that would get 100% ignored by major media companies is covered in the BBC, often better than local sources. This is especially true in Africa and Southeast Asia (and in places where the governments make reliable reporting pretty tough). If they shut down the BBC I'd be really sad, because there's no other global news agency that does English reporting of decent quality.

But in the last couple of years (I'd guess since their charter was changed) they seem to have become much more quiescent and wary of offending the government through any serious scrutiny or questioning. And when you get away from the purely institutional issues it's an inarguable fact that a lot of the BBC's UK-based political editors are massive tories, and really bad at hiding their sympathies.

I get the impression that the BBC is still licking its wounds from the fallout of Gilligan and the Hutton Enquiry, hence the reluctance to be seen criticising the sitting government. So basically its another thing we can blame on Blair.

Yeeeeeaaaah but kippers and other assorted racists call the BBC lefty biased commies when they don't publicise calls for the deaths of all non-whites. Leftists (itt, for example) have been calling the BBC biased when they don't publicise, or selectively edit major speeches by politicians campaigning in a General Election, or when they willfully ignore the statements of people who say they personally reported terrorists, in favour of spinning an editorial narrative. Or when they help schedule sequential resignations from the Labour party in order to get the most damaging and dramatic story possible. communism bitch fucked around with this message at 23:06 on Jun 4, 2017 |

Violent crime is strongly correlated with poverty and the secondary consequences of poverty. When people's material needs are adequately met they tend not to be violent towards each other. So yes, abolishing private property would have a knock-on effect on the causal factors of a great deal of violent crime. Obviously this a bit of a generalisation and some people are going to be dicks no matter how well they're doing, but I still reject the commonsensical idea that the police and prisons and the criminal justice system are a necessary basis upon which any society must function.
