I hope the good UK press and whatnot looks into that. smug n stuff posted:So Corbyn is definitely gonna stay on as leader, right? Absolutely no question. The Blairites in Labour are lining up to kiss the ring. Tonight's results, even in this form, looked literally impossible when May first called this election.

I don't see how another election is even possible unless they extend the Article 50 deadline. You can't just change your entire negotiating position halfway through.smug n stuff posted:So Corbyn is definitely gonna stay on as leader, right?

Murderion posted:MPs object a lot. The job of controlling them is assigned to "whips", a UK politics name almost as cool as "shadow chancellor". We have whips too in America! They just typically don't make big headlines. Sadly most people know of their existence from House of Cards which if I believe is based on a British drama. How strong is that DUP demand to hold up? Didn't the Lib Dems say they had all sorts of demands back in 2010 and folded for basically nothing?

Say it is Tory-Ulster to prop up the government, and say the Northern Irish remain unable to form a local government and rule goes back to Westminster. Does this give the Unionists humongous leverage to get Westminster to run NI the way they want it run?

Peven Stan posted:Iirc whipping is taken far more seriously in parliamentary systems. If a ton of people buck your majority then you're more or less forced into a vote of no confidence and new elections It is, but a majority in the low single-digits gives everyone the ability to gently caress with things and makes everyone feel like they can take the big chair. Staving off that exact problem was the primary goal in May's mind.

Irony Be My Shield posted:How stable would a DUP-Tory coalition/informal arrangement be? What kind of things could they block or demand? Fragile as a vase. The DUP is, IIRC, not terribly keen on Brexit and wants as soft a Brexit as possible. After May banged the Hard Brexit drum so hard and so much of the Conservative base ate it up, that'd be hard to keep going.

Irony Be My Shield posted:How stable would a DUP-Tory coalition/informal arrangement be? What kind of things could they block or demand? The DUP are American evangelist crazy, and any policies they force through can seriously gently caress the Tories' socially liberal, economically conservative cred. They've blocked gay marriage in NI, while the rest of the UK and Ireland have it. They'll really, really hurt the Tories if they're in the limelight.

The other reason it's a victory is that the Tories had 3 more years of majority in the bank if they did absolutely nothing. Those got deleted thanks to Corbyn.
