Campaigners like May would have gone down in flames fifty years ago, where some degree of talking to unconvinced voters was required. Thatcher, for all her faults, would never have made unforced errors like May/Cameron. Instead you get folk like May, who are really good at the closed-door scheming needed to get handed a safe seat, into the Cabinet, positive media coverage from friendly journos, plunging knives into her colleagues, etc. May has never faced a serious political challenge in her life - this is literally the first time she's had to seriously engage with the electorate. The political class self-selects for incompetence, and it's only ever going to get worse.
