Where are people getting this mythological status that it "infected" people? All it did was grey out a poster from the "pink" forums and give them that avatar, to make them easily identifiable. If they posted in the "Gray" forums enough times the cancer would evantually go away, but if they kept posting in the pink forums they would maintain the status. The goal was to starve out those forums but it was a dumb idea to begin with because if you post there why would you honestly care?

The idea was to highlight posts and posters that you can safely scroll past and not be missing anything. It mostly worked.

Huh, maybe it was just a silly rumor that you got it by posting by other cancer av people, and not by just posting in YCS and LF (think YOSPOS was in there too, before it got brought back). Never really posted in any of those besides a couple of YCS threads, so didn't follow a lot of the drama. edit: https://forums.somethingawful.com/dictionary.php?act=3&topicid=2309 I think it was that last line may have confused people. sweeperbravo posted:Didn't it just gray the person's text out and give them the accompanying av? Or did I come along after the true impact of forums cnacer It greyed out the entire post unless you moused over it, replaced their avatar with a picture of a dying cancer patient, and later did wacky CSS stuff like flip over their text. It was dumb because they could still read and post freely, it just meant everyone else was inconvenienced since they had to go to more effort to read it and to tell posters apart by username alone or if they didn't want to read it out of principle then they just had keep scrolling past big ugly grey blobs of illegible text. RagnarokAngel posted:The goal was to starve out those forums but it was a dumb idea to begin with because if you post there why would you honestly care? That might have been the stated goal but it's pretty obvious that they did it at least in part because it let them introduce forums chemo as one more source of revenue for the site. gently caress You And Diebold posted:you could also just filter the CSS to remove it iirc soo Also SALR automatically disables it and instead replaces it with a less intrusive green background.

I think they turned off automatic forums cancer at some point. Or at least, I remember people claiming it had been turned off, and I never got it from posting in YCS, yea even unto its final days.
