He doesn't qualify for the goaltender requirement (McCollum does) but he's still a valid Vegas pick even if he's a UFA.

The gently caress? I figured they'd go 4 D but make it Doughty, Martinez, Muzzin and McNabb. Why would they protect Forbort over any of them?

e: ah I guess McNabb was injured this year and maybe they don't think he'll be the same? If Florida and LA dont want Demers and McNabb I'd sure like them on the Leafs

Over, even the Thrashers made it a decade. Plus as other people have pointed out, it is confusing cheaper for some Canadian fans to catch their team there than domestically.

Goligoski had a decent career, Bryan Rust is showing potential. After that you either have to stretch and include Rick Tabaracci, or go way back include Greg Malone (2nd rd in '76). Could be worse.

The thing I find disturbing is how many times the Flames have blown their 1st rd pick since winning the cup. So many busts. The one that pisses me off most is Rico Fata though. We passed on some pretty drat good players just in the 6-12 range for that schlub. Could have had Alex Tanguay in his prime (instead of trading for him), or Nik Antropov. SImon Gagne and Scott Gomez also could have been had although they would have been considered stretches (which is something I think causes GMa's to make poor choices, they worry about being accused of reaching for guys).

Protecting Matt Martin over a <24 year old PPG player in the AHL in Leipsic. Signing worst centre in the league Ben Smith to meet veteran exposure requirements so that he could protect Martin in the first place.

Hell, they could have exposed Komarov and kept one of their forward prospects, it's not like Vegas would take him.

At 23 a player is at or very close to their peak offensively. Brendan Leipsic isn't any further along in his career than Linden Vey was at the same age. Not that protecting Martin is a sensible decision, but don't expect Leipsic to be anything more than a bottom six skill guy in the NHL. More likely a career AHLer than not. I doubt Vegas selects him.

here's The Big List of protected and exposed players for every team:
https://www.nhl.com/news/protected-list-for-vegas-golden-knights-nhl-expansion-draft/c-289972722?tid=289242400

Penguins went with 4F/4D - Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, and Hornqvist for F, Letang, Dumoulin, Maatta, and Schultz on D, so Hagelin, Rust, MAF, and maaaaybe Cole are the only players left exposed with a realistic chance of going to Vegas.
