did you forget Fleetwood? I mean, my great grandma lived there and even 10 year old me found it boring. Southport I went to once to watch Slough play in the 1998 FA Trophy Semi Final 2nd Leg. They delayed the kick-off by half an hour because no fucker was there, decided that 150 of us Slough fans needed 20 cops and 4 on horseback to keep us in line, and the school which shared a border with the ground had a barbed wire fence to keep the students in. Needless to say, we lost due to the most offside goal ever and started our plummet towards true non-league obscurity and not even Sophie Howard can make it better

No-one remembers Fleetwood that hasn't lived there. It's even part of my local constituency and I don't remember it.

By 97 and after half a decade of my hair not feeling steel it was luxuriant and halfway down my back, and Labour romped home. Maturity meant I slowly started trimming it back over the years, and Labour likewise faded. In 2010 it was back to short back and sides and Labour crashed and burned. The following years of austerity saw me sporting a more roundhead look and Labour were in the doldrums. Now for reasons mostly to do with midlife crisis I'm growing it back out and Labour are back, baby. Now it's hot and I really desperately need a good shearing and yet the possibility of a snap election has me too terrified to visit the barbers.

The Guardian says

quote:

The Conservative council responsible for the tower block where at least 79 people died in a fire described by the mayor of London as preventable has stockpiled £274m of reserves and offered rebates to residents paying the top rate of council tax.

According to the latest accounts, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea ran a budget surplus, which Labour councillors have claimed was being used as a slush fund to bribe voters with a rebate close to elections.

A draft statement of Kensington and Chelsea’s accounts for 2016-17 disclosed that the council has an “AA” credit rating and a financial standing described as robust, with “usable reserves at 31 March 2017 of £274m (£300m at 31 March 2016)”.

The council has been relieved of responsibility for taking care of the survivors of the disaster, having struggled to cope with the aftermath of the deadly blaze. A new Grenfell fire response team, made up of representatives from central government, the British Red Cross, the Metropolitan police, London-wide local and regional government and the London fire brigade, will now coordinate efforts.

In 2014, the council decided to hand back £100 to residents paying the top rate of council tax in 2014 after a claimed “overachieving efficiency drive”, a decision criticised in a letter to the Guardian following the high-rise fire.

The rebate was paid weeks before local elections which returned a Conservative council, the author of the letter wrote. “Austerity, K&C style: you give to the rich while taking from the poor (nobody with discounted bills or claiming council tax support was eligible to share in the bounty of the town hall blue-chips).

“As the toxic ash of Grenfell Tower’s vanity cladding falls over the neighbouring streets, we are left with the acrid truth in our throats: regeneration in the Royal Borough is in fact a crime of greed and selfishness,” the author wrote.
Labour councillors have said the refund was a form of bribe handed to wealthy voters just before the local elections. Robert Atkinson, leader of the council’s Labour group, told a budget meeting this year that the Tories were “bribing the electorate with its own money” after the council “systematically and deliberately created underspends”.

Before the fire, residents of the tower block had protested about cuts to the housing budget. In 2015, the council paid £5m from its reserves to help establish Opera Holland Park, formerly a department of the Kensington and Chelsea, as an independent charity.

Last year, housing officials in the borough took about £55m in rent, but invested less than £40m back in council housing.

It's pretty stable at 38% for a while too. I wonder at what point in the 55-64 range people start supporting capitalism more, because under that age it's surprisingly uniform apparently.

That's net approval, according to the label on the left, which would mean that even in the youngest cohort approval of capitalism leads disapproval by 38 points.

But that does seem wrong somehow because I doubt the olds approve of immigration more than they disapprove by 37 points.

it's not substantially their decision to make; best value directives are encoded in statute. this is not Thatcherite competitive bidding but the local council must be at least able to articulate what value it is purchasing, which is not easily done when this implies a claim that the council knows better than the housing ministry

that's the spending side; on the revenue side these are mainly ringfenced grants anyway

k&c may have specific arrangements of course

GEORGE W BUSHI

I just went to Ashcroft's site to check the raw data and yeah, whoever made that chart doesn't know what net means. There is an extra option for "a mixed blessing" beyond good or bad in Ashcroft's polling on the issues so don't take 38% of 18-24 year olds thinking capitalism is good means 62% think it's bad (it was actually 32%).

41% of olds said immigration was bad vs. 37% who said it was good.
