sassassin posted:I'm not changing work hours that's insane. I'll just sack everyone (I don't like) who lives further away instead because now I "can't afford them". sassassin posted:And surely employers could just reimburse employees for the cheapest reasonable method of arrival (renting his nephew's bmx) instead of indulgent rail travel options. sassassin posted:I'm going to force insane ride-sharing arrangements with employees having to make 100 mile round trips to pick everyone up before paying for individual rail tickets. Excellent, if we're going to do this we need to know what kind of tricks could be pulled so we can get ahead of them I'm aware that this change would incentivise replacing workers who live far from their jobs with ones who live closer. In the long run this is a positive change because less time and fuel would be wasted getting people to work. We should make sure it's not legal to sack someone explicitly because they live far away, and for those who do lose their jobs let's have a robust, generous and dignified welfare system to help them out. Ideally as normal turnover happens there would be a gradual shift towards employees who live locally. Perhaps this change should be phased in over time and with plenty of notice to employers so they can change their hiring policies ahead of implementation. I'm also in favour of decentralising the country by investing in areas outside of London and encouraging business growth elsewhere so there are actually local jobs. I don't see this as a standalone change but as part of a grand vision for a less poo poo Britain under Corbynocracy. I'm also not wedded to the idea if it does turn out to be dumb I quite fancy employers also having to pay a wage for time spent travelling too and from work to further incentivise making things more efficient. This would make your last idea unworkable, I think. Intentionally extending employees' travel times would increase expenses on wages. And if you're paying someone for the time he spends using his nephew's bmx, he's getting paid to get fit. I'd take it. Actual figures would need to be worked out by people who know their poo poo to incentivise the right behaviour. And if you really can't make any useful changes to reduce your expenditure on employees' travel, suck it up and deal with it. It's the cost of doing business. A bunch of liberals i'm friends with on Facebook were crying about the fact that the burned out husk of Grenfell tower was being plastered all over the news because it was "upsetting". Like, yeah, rampant capitalism causing people to burn to death in easily preventable fires is pretty upsetting. The solution is to do something about it, not whine that you don't like to be reminded that society values profit over people's lives.

By the way, when we nationalise the trains I think we should go all-in on making them a pleasure to use. The public at large don't get what a huge positive it would inherently be, and intangible economic benefits are not going to make an impression on most people. Make the trains more reliable and reduce fares, yes, but upgrade them in all sorts of other ways too. Give them better capacity so there's less crowding. Make them quicker if possible. Hell, make them better-looking. Make dealing with British rail vastly better than what people are used to from a privatised service so it's legit impossible to deny that nationalisation was an improvement. Get public support strongly behind it and maybe we'll get to keep our nationalised service long-term. Spend money like you mean it. No half measures.
