It's easier to change the threshold than it is to get it enacted in the first place. Plus, don't some really big companies set things like breaks/lunches based on the state with the strictest rules so that the can have a uniform policy? So this might have benefits for workers nationwide (I'm being way too hopeful, aren't I?). 500+ is still going to cover a fuckload of people and I feel like they are likely the worst abusers of it. Enforcement will probably be lacking. xrunner posted:Ah. I had read this would be a first of its kind pice of legislation. Interesting that's it's limited to food and retail service. Why them specifically? Why not all job types?

Call centers, for one. Or at least the one I worked at. Them slashing hours and rearranging schedules on a whim is what eventually lead to me getting fired from FULL Creative/Voicecurve when I started telling my coworkers how to apply for unemployment benefits after losing so many hours.

I can imagine there are good reasons to exempt various emergency services like nurses or EMTs. But you could achieve that with a blacklist rather than a whitelist.

The Portland police have issued a statement regarding their actions during the June 4 protest of a right-wing rally, a week after three men were stabbed on a train. http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2017/06/portland_police_chief_defends.html Takeaways from this statement: Taking pictures of people who were corralled might have been completely disavowed by every agency at the time, despite photographic evidence, but it was actually something they checked with the DA and the Portland city attorney on, who said it was okay. No one yet knows why some of the nazi members participating in the rally were assisting the police in detaining and arresting protestors. One police officer got a widdle boo-boo on him arm, and that's why they need to wear full riot gear, because it could have been a bigger ouchie. Content warning for this image! View at your own risk!

I worked in a warehouse where you could try to "choose" your shift but every 3 or 4 weeks they'd make you have to try to get that same shift back - or just be shunted to a 8+ hour different schedule.. Have you ever worked graveyard and had to change to daytime overnight? It's not easy, or pleasant. Doing it once a month is really unhealthy, as well.. It's like being badly jetlagged for half of a week, very month.. Not to mention how it might gently caress up your family's schedule, childcare, etc.. What work experience do you actually have, to even question this being an issue? coyo7e fucked around with this message at 23:11 on Jun 24, 2017 |
