There are similar laws in other cities/states, and as far as I know getting a reliable work schedule within a reasonable timeframe is still a near impossibility everywhere.

The 500 employees thing is pretty brutal but it's better than nothing and it could set a useful precedent. It's easier to change the threshold than it is to get it enacted in the first place. Plus, don't some really big companies set things like breaks/lunches based on the state with the strictest rules so that the can have a uniform policy? So this might have benefits for workers nationwide (I'm being way too hopeful, aren't I?).

500+ is still going to cover a fuckload of people and I feel like they are likely the worst abusers of it. Enforcement will probably be lacking.

If I had to guess I'd say they're more visibly fighting for labor rights. Which isn't to say that blue collar workers need to be louder or fight harder, but when there's a picket line outside of Starbucks or an Old Navy, your congressperson is going to know about it.

Call centers, for one. Or at least the one I worked at. Them slashing hours and rearranging schedules on a whim is what eventually lead to me getting fired from FULL Creative/Voicecurve when I started telling my coworkers how to apply for unemployment benefits after losing so many hours.

you're wrong about that middle bit, there. the Small Business Owners that politicians love to fawn over are some of the worst scumbags on earth. they're all galt wannabes who think violating labor rights is the only way to get by in business.

think about uber for a second, and now imagine a CEO with travis kalanick's contempt for regulation combined with the bitterness of being unable to cop it on a national level, and you have the average small business owner

I can imagine there are good reasons to exempt various emergency services like nurses or EMTs. But you could achieve that with a blacklist rather than a whitelist.

Landlords are one kind of small business owner, and property is usually handed down to children/heirs, and they are largely unrepentant scum.

Or we could not exempt them and let nurses and EMTs actually work a normal human schedule rather than the 12/24 hour bullshit they're currently subjected to.

The Portland police have issued a statement regarding their actions during the June 4 protest of a right-wing rally, a week after three men were stabbed on a train. http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2017/06/portland_police_chief_defends.html
Takeaways from this statement:
Taking pictures of people who were corralled might have been completely disavowed by every agency at the time, despite photographic evidence, but it was actually something they checked with the DA and the Portland city attorney on, who said it was okay.
No one yet knows why some of the nazi members participating in the rally were assisting the police in detaining and arresting protestors.
One police officer got a widdle boo-boo on him arm, and that's why they need to wear full riot gear, because it could have been a bigger ouchie. Content warning for this image! View at your own risk!

Holy poo poo, a LOT of them. Basically any non white-collar employment (blue collar) can have all kinds of bullshit swing shift schedules, radically-changed-on-no-notice schedules, etc. Security guarsd are one example of "paid poo poo, expected to work all kinds fo hosed-up hours with little to no warning in all kinds of weather" (one of my friends went from working at the local library to doing a 10pm-8am walking shift in the middle of winter, he caught the flu and was sick as a dog for 3 weeks, he mostly showed up to work and gutted it out, but it was pretty much due to being forced to walk around outdoors in midwinter in the PNW in the middle of the night, after working indoors for a couple months during daytime hours.)

I worked in a warehouse where you could try to "choose" your shift but every 3 or 4 weeks they'd make you have to try to get that same shift back - or just be shunted to a 8+ hour different schedule.. Have you ever worked graveyard and had to change to daytime overnight? It's not easy, or pleasant. Doing it once a month is really unhealthy, as well.. It's like being badly jetlagged for half of a week, very month.. Not to mention how it might gently caress up your family's schedule, childcare, etc..

What work experience do you actually have, to even question this being an issue? :allears:

However, not long afterward, according to Clemans, longtime SPD captain Ron Rasmussen complained in a meeting that all changes in the center had to go through him. Rasmussen dismissed the usefulness of the highlighter program, Clemans said. He admits that when that happened, he “blew up,” yelling and cursing at Rasmussen. He was escorted out of the building and hasn’t been allowed back to SPD headquarters since then.

Hopefully they get someone more stable next time.

Hopefully they get someone more stable next time.

Understatement.

He asked 35 cities in the state to provide all their databases regardless of relation to public safety.

For visual inspection.

All on the same due date.

So he could put them in his own new hand crafted artisanal transparency website.

Which he would collate data for by his visual inspections of said databases.

Well yeah. Superspergs and authoritarians cant communicate productively. Someone should blog about it.

Edit: Although to clarify - I suspect the initial motivation in the department wanting to increase and speed up its abilities to edit body cam footage to begin with was not to "increase transparency" or "accountability".

I guess I don't really know how often I hear people say the name of the state but I've never heard anyone pronounce it warshington on the eastern half of the state, only occasional people in western washington. My impression was it tended to be something that showed up more in pockets than any sort of an eastern washington/western washington thing.
