The focus is on the horror of WW1 and the dead of all other wars, and the general terrible toll war's taken on us historically and will in future until it's futility is recognised. Armed forces day is an equivalent to veterans day where it's meant to be about living service and ex-service people; this can have a reasonable purpose when used to highlight how the government is entirely willing to pay for rifles and tanks but not for homes, mental health counselling, or disability benefits for these people when they get back. If you wanted to condense the two down, I'm sure you could, but there's an entirely legitimate pacifist reason to be attending the event, and, in all honesty, I think you can only really attend and speak in good conscience if you are a pacifist, since anything else is "I care, but not enough to actually want people's lives to have not been scarred".

How the gently caress would the EU would even react if after two years of extremely annoying negotiations Britain decided, you know what, this conditions suck, we take it back. Is that what Theresa May means by no deal is better than a bad deal? Is she a secret Remainer and we've been misjudging her? Well, we know she really is a Remainer, but that's not what I mean.

Finally got round to watching Corbs speaking at Glastonbury, and... drat. I had no idea I'd get so choked up when Jam-Master J said 'another world is possible'. Made me realise how dark my outlook has become since Brexit and Trump. Seeing someone sincere and passionate in front of such a gloriously huge and hopeful crowd tell us that things don't have to be this way was really powerful for me. This is what hope feels like, isn't it? Welcome back, old friend.

JFairfax posted:loving hell man sort it out, live music is amazing. OwlFancier is far too moderate on this topic. Live music is absolutely loving shite. I cannot understand why concerts are even a thing. You're in a hot venue surrounded by countless other people. That's bad enough to make them truly hellish to begin with, but not only that, the music itself is inferior, with imperfections and interfering other sounds and speakers not tuned properly and mic feedback and people not knowing how to use a mic or singing while out of breath or whatever, you have no control over what songs they actually play, you can't change what's being played if your mood changes, you probably have to listen to some talentless wasters opening for whoever you're actually there to see, you've got listen to stupid platitudes about "Wow it's so great to be here in [Town]!" and "Are we having a good time?" and "this next song is bla bla bla" just get loving on with it, and not only can nobody dance but you are expected to as well, despite not enjoying it and not being any good at it. And people voluntarily pay and travel to and from places to do all this, it's mental.

^^^ start a band and make other people listen to you!Mr. Nemo posted:How the gently caress would the EU would even react if after two years of extremely annoying negotiations Britain decided, you know what, this conditions suck, we take it back. Is that what Theresa May means by no deal is better than a bad deal? Is she a secret Remainer and we've been misjudging her? Well, we know she really is a Remainer, but that's not what I mean. Well she kept repeating "no deal is better than a bad deal" when Paxman was pushing her to say "yes I am prepared to take us out of the EU with no deal", or something like that. She really obviously didn't want to commit to it, even though she's been happy to heavily imply it - read into that what you will The EU (well some of its key people anyway) has been making a lot of positive noise about the possibility of the UK giving up on the whole idea, even saying things like a change of government would justify reversing article 50. Of course that really depends on what the rest of the EU decides - they're in a very strong negotiating position I've always thought there's a possibility for dual negotiations, if the EU really wants us to stay in - an exit deal, which will obviously be bad (especially if it's meant to be a disincentive) but also a remain deal, which would involve making some concessions to the UK. But it couldn't be a reward, and other nations would want something in exchange for supporting it - you'd be looking at some sweeping changes and basically a reform of the EU in many ways. As much a way of keeping it from falling apart as keeping us in I mean there are goons in this thread who know a lot about EU bureaucracy and even work in it, so they could probably say what the actual chances of this are. But Corbyn's position was always one of staying in the EU but with reforms to workers' rights, nationalisation restrictions, economic policy and the like. If the case can be made for a new Remain option, membership of a better EU, you might have a meaningful positive choice that demands another referendum, instead of 'uhhh we couldn't get a good deal from the EU should we just give up on Brexit then' and hoping it's negative enough to sway enough people And the majority does support going ahead with it right now, even where they think the referendum reached the wrong decision. So transforming 'overturn the vote' (which will draw anger like you've never seen and put remain voters on the defensive) into an assertive choice to move things forward in a positive, hopeful way that resonates with people right now - that would be helpful!
