So I remember it was weird when one day it occurred to me that boy, we hadn't heard from Gary Oldman and Gillian and the A-List cast and all that for a long time.

And now the same thing just happened again; what happened to all the shows and streams and those shenanigans? Is that all still going on and the thread doesn't talk about it or can't be bothered to mock it anymore, or has all that quietly faded away like the A-List cast and everything else?

Quietly faded away, unless I missed something

Funny thing is, they can't even use that mocap data in the current version of the game. Maybe doing all that before they had the engine nailed down was a bad idea? Who knew?

What makes the Star Citizen IP valuable?

It's like that one movie Star Wars, but also like Firefly, with a good dose of that one video game Call of Duty thrown in as well as some more movie called Dune. With a pinch of Blade Runner and also Das Boot mixed with Top Gun.

So as you can see it's a very creative effort full of totally unique ideas that definitely deserve to be worth millions.

I'd love the second one, especially if they actually went forward with the idea that "intakes" are dumb but thrust reversers are cool and good. Honestly that would have been an interesting aesthetic; make ships basically all about having a hilarious amount of engines that really convey a sense of power. But nope, can't be thematically interesting, gotta have jets in space.

Has anyone estimated the amount of money Chris, Sandi, Lawyerboy, and Erin have stuffed into their pockets from this?

153 Million dollars over 5 years or so in crowdfunding. I think there's been mention of "investments" from some places too and, of course, loans.

We should probably include gifts as well. Orgs (and individuals), in the beginning, were trying to outdo each other on expensive booze, meals, jewelry, and crap.

I'm almost certain that Sandi and Chris's marriage is just for appearance (or the kids), so their finances are probably separate for this calculation.

I'm going to make up a number and say that since January 1, 2013 CIG has fleeced 200,000,000 from idiots. That's 40 MILLION dollars a year.

Now I know that the operating costs have fluctuated, a lot. But what's the high side? 2 million a month average for the 5 years? That would leave 80 million dollars laying around somewhere.

You know that Chris, Sandi, Lawyerboy, and Erin have their salaries in that 2 million dollars a month operating cost, but what about bonuses? As the board members they could be awarding themselves whatever they want from that 80,000,000$.

And the company (companies) are probably paying for their cars/houses/vacations/boats/etc.

So, a recap.

CIG has taken in 200,000,000 dollars over 5 years. They've spent 120,000,000 dollars in operating expenses. That leaves Chris and co with 80,000,000 dollars (plus whatever their salary is) to keep them warm and comfortable for the rest of their lives even after this all collapses.

A lot of you guys are smarter than me and can probably tighten that who formula up. Please do if you know more than me.

Hard at work you guys. No time off. Not even one day.

Speculatively I wouldn't be surprised if they each "earned" between 2 million - 5 million for their personal bank account.

Probably also expensed all trips and other stuff to the company account.

For the game itself you're looking at probably 300k in game art asset value. Despite multiple refactors there's really not a lot of art. There's not even enough to make a decent enough single player game with multiple unique looking levels. You've got basically really super pretty arenas and small places. They probably spent 20 million or more getting these assets, but the final stuff is not impressive, unique, and most importantly there's not a lot of it.

Programming value I'd put at around 50k. It's a mod, that doesn't work, and can't be made into a functional game without serious help. The art far outshines its programming, and this is CIGs failure.

YouTube videos I'd guess at around 8-12 million. A lot of work went into them and a lot of editing. YouTube videos also includes the dumb poo poo demos that never were anything more than videos or staged gameplay. A metric ton of work went into making it appear that there was a real game happening here.

Marketing I'd bet they are at around 5 million. Lots of dodgy stuff and secret users doing stuff and crazy websites out of thin air. This was as dodgy as the YouTube stuff.

Finally you have "useless poo poo" and fake art. Useless poo poo includes motion capture of actors, guys mopping, and other stuff so pointless that probably even with motion capture nobody had the nerve to tell Chris Roberts they could only use the data sometimes as a reference and everything still ended up keyframed mostly by hand. The majority of this is probably 100% useless like all the actors data from the very beginning of the project before literally anything was even remotely nailed down. I think the value of this data sits at around 500k, but probably cost 70-90 million to get.

Throw in random numbers for salaries and office costs.

I think it's funny, because even if my numbers are way off because I'm not a pro banker, I don't think anybody can argue that out of everything, the stuff that made it into the actual game is worth the least amount of money, and they spent the least amount of money trying to get it.

If CR had to choose between a big name actor for his motion capture or a competent programmer, ask yourself who you think got the money, and also how much value that added to the "finished" product.

The bank will auction off what it can, probably try to sell the IP and it might get bought by whatever Chinese or Korean dev studio CR is using and they'll build either a mobile game or a cash-in arcade game.

It's not a coincidence that these designs would actually look pretty good rendered in low-res 2D sprites for a game like Wing Commander 1. The large cylindrical intake/exhaust shapes make it very clear which way the ship is facing at a glance.

the technical term is aether and in fact, as Newton observed, the aether must get thinner the higher you go as the currents of aether being drawn into the celestial bodies is the cause of objects to move through it in reliably downward direction ever toward the larger body, but at a rate that diminishes at distance such that the celestial bodies themselves are not drawn so much into each other that they collide.
