Peel posted:This cannot be stressed enough for Americans visiting the thread: the US healthcare system is uniquely bad. It delivers mediocre outcomes at extremely high prices, well outside the range of costs of other developed world systems. You can debate which system would be best to switch to, but the answer to 'would we be be better off with [other first-world country system]?' is always 'yes.' Scene: Monty Hall's "Let's Make a Healthcare Deal" An American reaches the final game—the one everyone's familiar with, where you have three doors, behind one of which is a car and the remaining two, a goat. Except in this version, there are sixty doors. One is decorated with gaudy red, white, and blue stars and stripes* while the others are more tastefully done. Monty asks the American to choose a door. The American immediately points to the red, white, and blue door while chanting "USA!! USA!! USA!!" Monty opens that door to reveal a goat. Monty then opens the remaining fifty-nine doors to reveal a range of single-payer universal healthcare options, each of which delivers better outcomes at a lower total cost to the taxpayer than the American system. He then asks if the American would like to switch doors. The American does not switch doors and loudly insults each of them while pissing all over the studio * autocorrect tried to capitalise that, wtf fake edit: snyep

So tomorrow Labour will table an amendment to the Queen's speech to end the public sector pay cap. Pretty canny politics really, since several Tories (including Hunt himself) have suggested support for this policy is dropping and it's probably going to be ditched soon. By bringing this amendment Labour get to hit the Tories for voting it down, especially after bunging a load of money to Northern Ireland, and then they get to claim they pressured the government into it if the pay cap does get dropped. It's sure to ruffle a few feathers with Tories in marginal seats, especially if they've tried to play up their anti-austerity views.

America is a militaristic hyper nationalistic county that borders on fascism at times and the horrible reality is that trumps incompetence is actually probably for the best as democrats and republicans alike are both on board with the militarist empire. poo poo is hosed but it has been since the 1960s and trump isn't really that big of a deal and is in fact a distraction from the real issues of militarism, nationalism, American exceptionalism and the institutional racism

If you're looking for solace in UK politics you might want to strap in for a bumpy ride. JC/Labour have been emboldened and it's a once in a generation event for a socialist opposition to look so healthy but a lot more has to change to stop me from grimacing every time I go to read a newspaper.

We do have a bit of a complication in that socialist policies are popular up until the exact second you suggest someone who isn't white might get those benefits, here. Then the screaming starts. E: Though I imagine that's true in Britain, too. Trying to criticize policy they can't attack on policy basis by turning to racism is one of the favorite tactics of the right.
