Seaside Loafer posted:

The problem at the moment is that extortionate letting agency fees disproportionately harm tenants. Rental markets tend to have a surplus of demand - tenants will shop around different houses/flats but there's little opportunity to shop around different agents for the purposes of minimising fees - if you find a place you like you are stuck with whatever agency is managing it. However, it's relatively easy for Landlords to shop around different agencies when choosing one to manage their property.

When agents are only able to charge landlords, competition to attract landlords should result in a lowering of fees, as Landlords will want to find agencies that will minimise their expenses (or at least provide services that justify their fees. More cynically, of course, they'll all de facto agree to keep them equally high and those costs will get passed on to the tenant through higher rents. Either way - it is a law that is good and should be pursued, but for it to be properly effective it also needs to be in a wider context with greater control on rents and the rental market more generally. Unfortunately, a lot of MPs are landlords, so good luck getting much through Parliament...

£520 is loving ridiculous and that agency deserves an email specifying that. You did good.

It's no solution but I would prefer a fixed known amount added to my rent than basically an unknown cost added at signing. I imagine most people don't really know the letting agent fees before they've committed to a place--I never do at least.

It seems like one of very few Tory policies that would go down reasonably well (even if it probably wouldn't make a huge splash), so it's hilarious that they haven't been able to get any movement on it since its original proposal a year ago. Speaks to their dysfunction, I suppose.

Fixed. Although without radical change from above or below, the only solution seems to be housing cooperatives where the stock is held in common, and the only people with the capital and will to do something like that at present seem to be the Quakers.

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure there is evidence to suggest (from areas where letting fees are banned i.e Scotland) that rents haven't risen as a result.

Survivors of the Grenfell Tower disaster have been banned from the first meeting of senior councillors since the fire amid fears of “disruption”.

Kensington and Chelsea council is to hold a private cabinet meeting led by the council leader, Nicholas Paget-Brown, who has been widely criticised in the wake of fire. It will be held behind closed doors to avoid a repeat of protests on the Friday after the fire when angry residents stormed the town hall.

Councillors will discuss the Grenfell Tower fire, according to a notice on the local authority’s website, joined by support officers and “invited guests (if any)”.

The notice says: “Please note this meeting will be held entirely in private session, pursuant to Standing Order 31.01, in the light of the risk of disruption (as witnessed on Friday 16 June) and consequent security and public safety concerns.

“As such it will be open only to council members, support officers and invited guests (if any). The public minutes of this meeting will be published, in due course, on the council website.”

Have to see if it keeps up, but Labour are presenting a very effective opposition at the moment.

They're pushing the government into multiple situations that forces them to trade off short-term power with their long-term electoral prospects.

Also just letting Tories be Tories, such as the cheer at the end of the vote on public sector pay yesterday, an unforced situation which makes it clear they are massive shits with zero integrity.

That contrasts with Labour not cheering JC on his way into PMQs yesterday. Clearly deliberate and to provide a contrast.

Reckon we'll see Tories cheering successfully blocking NI women access to abortions later?

The University of Manchester just gave George Osborne a honorary Professorship in Economics...
To whom do I complain? Not only have his policies directly made thousands of lives worse and shouldn't be rewarded, austerity also isn't sound economics.

e: ahahaha, look at this absolute wank of a press release we got:

quote:

Since leaving government, Mr Osborne has remained committed to this idea as chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, the membership of which includes the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell.
This business-led body was launched in September 2016 and is formed of leaders from businesses, civic society and other groups devoted to increasing the contribution to the UK economy from the North. It produces original research, encourages innovative thinking and hosts thought-provoking events in order to develop new policy ideas to influence government.

What are job training programmes? Apprenticeships? Scholarships?
No, what we need are Innovative Thinking™ and Thought-Provoking Events®

quote:

He said: “I am bowled over by this honour. The University of Manchester was at the centre of so many things I tried to achieve as Chancellor, from the promotion of new science to the building of the links between this country and countries like China. It is also one of the jewels in the crown of the Northern Powerhouse. [...]
I remain completely committed to that idea that together the different communities in the North can work together so that the whole is greater than the parts - and I believe more strongly than I ever did that the entire county, including our capital, would benefit from a stronger North. That's why I remain closely involved as chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership - and look forward to playing a part in the life of The University of Manchester.”
Emphasis mine.

For those that like the economist Mark Blyth, here's a good talk along with Michael Roberts, another economist with Marxist leanings.

A lot of what they talk about is global economics, but there are lots of bits about the UK economy (specifically that we don't really have one any more, we just survive on housing bubbles) and also a nice bit about Corbyn right at the end from Mark.

e: another positive take away from this video is that career politicians aren't ideological and could shift to socialist policies if that's where the votes are

VATICAN CITY Australian police announced Thursday they are pursuing charges against Cardinal George Pell over allegations of historic sexual abuse against minors, bringing the decades-long clergy sexual abuse crisis directly to the Vatican for the first time and placing pressure on Pope Francis to oust one of his closest advisors.

"Police have charged Cardinal George Pell with historical sexual assault offenses," Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton of the Australian state of Victoria announced. "Cardinal Pell has been charged on summons and he is required to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 18 this year for a filing hearing."

"Cardinal Pell is facing multiple charges in respect of historic sexual offenses and there are multiple complainants relating to those charges," Patton continued.

..

The charges also mark a stunning cap to Pell’s storied career. The cardinal, 76, has long been the highest ranking Australian Catholic prelate, leading the archdioceses of both Melbourne and Sydney before being called to Rome by Francis in 2014 to serve as the Vatican’s number-three official.

Pell also serves on the pope's nine-member Council of Cardinals, which is advising the pontiff on reforming the Vatican bureaucracy.
