There was the time that Napoleon nearly reached an agreement with Haiti which might have led to total French dominance in the Gulf due to the Haitian rebels being the only sizeable number of "seasoned" soldiers in the region. In the end Napoleon decided to send several large armies to be ravaged by tropical diseases instead. Afterwards Napoleon himself said: "The Santo Domingo affair was a foolish business on my part. It was the greatest mistake I ever made in my administration." In general Yellow Fever devastated European migrants to the Caribbean and Central America. Bolivar lost his wife to yellow when she came back to Venezuela with him. Bolivar then sunk himself into politics in part to get over his loss. Yeah the only reason it didn't affect both continents equally bad is because Europe was in the middle of that post-plague population boom. Well, that, and native americans didnt have the ability to sail east and start wars and poo poo to destabilize people

Yeah, the Americas hadn't been exposed to swine or cow diseases yet. Smallpox strains that weren't very potent elsewhere hit the Americas like some captain trips poo poo. There's accounts of explorers heading upriver and encountering large towns and on the way back a few weeks / months later the area is totally deserted. 1491 is a good book people should read it

The Mojave phone booth was a phone booth out in the middle of bumfuck, nowhere. Back in '99, someone thought the Holy Spirit was telling him to answer the phone, so he camped out by it, miles from any other sign of civilization, for 32 days. One of the phone's callers identified themselves as Sergeant Zeno and said they worked at the Pentagon.

Can confirm that Sgt Zeno was very much a goon. He used to post awesome pictures from his tour in Djibouti, which I hosted back when I ran a small game hosting businesses. (This is probably 10 or 12 years ago.)

(This is probably 10 or 12 years ago.) Yep, same guy. From what I remember he planned and led the logistics/protective details of foreign trips for US officials. His office was in the Pentagon, and while screwing around on the internet decided to dial the number of the Mojave Phone Booth. The thing was that his real last name is "Zeno". When someone actually picked up the phone and said, "who is this?", he quite truthfully said, "Sergeant Zeno from the Pentagon." Dumbassry ensued. He had a pretty long thread with details of his career, etc. and was a pretty nice guy.

The previous incarnation of the search function, retarded as it was, had the ability to search by username and as you typed it would give a dropdown list of names matching what you were typing so far in. It made it really easy to find users even if they didn't have a single post left in the active forums. For a long time both the old and new search functions were working at the same time but it looks like sometime in the past year or three they took down the old search function so I don't know if there's anyway to search the username database

I had an appointment with a civilian hip specialist that I've been waiting for since June, and it turned out the specialist that Navy Med referred me to doesn't even do the surgery I was sent to them to get. According to my case manager, when Navy Med refers you to a civilian specialist, they just make sure they're the right kind of doctor. Apparently it's too much work to make sure that doctor does the surgery you need before sending you to them.
