Why are you looking for something new? Money? Respect? Title? or just looking for something new and different?

I dont think I would burn bridges here, and my boss and co workers like me. That said its a serious enough operation I could certainly not come into the machine shop where I currently work if I no longer worked there. But I think I could maintain relationships enough that I might be able to come back if I left.

Im mostly looking for something new and some career advancement. Im still an Engineer 1, got passed over for a promotion last cycle, and my only friend who got a promotion got it by threatening to leave if he didn't. The new job would be a senior engineering position that Im well qualified for. So I feel that for career growth reasons it would be a good way to go. I don't know that I will get much advancement at my current job.

It was my 34th birthday yesterday and I bought my first new computer in years, I always stuffed 5 year old machines with the fastest CPUs, SSDs, and RAM and did just fine. For the last few years they haven't gotten newer so its now stuffing 8+ year old machines and now its not as cheap to do. The new one a cheap piece of crap from Staples but it totally beats a Xeon E5355 and 8GB RAM with a dying Quadro card for electronics/hobby work and a early i5-2300 as a TV PC. :feelsgood:

All this to stop myself from buying a rusty, overpriced, decade-unregistered 1987 Samurai tintop. Totally unmodified and under 70K miles, though huge body rust for the Desert-by-the-Sea that is California.

All in all, a chill place to live.

Edit: The commute to irving is a bit of a bitch. My dad did it off and on as work necessitated, but ultimately say gently caress it due to the time required for that commute. Also, there are a poo poo ton more stores and such along I-20 in between cooper and collins there in arlington for non hardware needs.

Google is predicting 45 minutes to an hour at my normal leave time, for about 35 miles, and about the same in the mornings. My current drive is 20-30 minutes. I'm willing to put up with more traffic/drive time in order to get land and privacy. I have a coworker who lives in Canton (70 miles from work - he bought his grandmother's place), so this is still better than his commute, but he does it for the same reasons. And yeah, he bought a little Mitsu Charade for the commute.

The thing I hate that I'm starting to run into is that it seems once you're into a company and doing a decent job, suddenly you're always too important to promote, but can't be paid more without a promotion. I've yet to work anywhere that actually promotes from within as opposed to just hiring someone new to fill the spot that a lot of internal people would really like and are qualified for.

I don't have a solution, but it's not just you.

If a company will let you go for various small reasons then it's only fair that employees treat their companies with the same respect. Loyalty goes both ways and you should give just as much as the company you work for as a baseline. It's just smart business imho.

My company used to be a medium sized, privately held family owned company. About 8 years ago we were bought out my a massive US based publicly traded company and the differences as an employee were amazing. Things like sick days, vacation days, general remuneration, defined benefit pensions, etc went from basically "treating your employees well so they are happy to stay" to "lets do the minimum the law requires us to do" for many instances. It was so poorly done, for years we had 2 tiers of employees; those from my company and those from the company that did the buying out. We had benefits the other employees never had and they were, rightfully so, insanely jealous. It took them about 5 years to give our benefits to everyone.

Also taking heat transfer 2 (because I hate myself) and an elective called "small satellite payloads & integration". Should gel nicely with my extracurriculars.

The wild part is that for the first time in like 2 years, I've only got class 2 days a week... meaning I may even have the spare time for an internship, if I can get in to one.

Maybe... I won't crash and burn?

Aaaaaand someone's crashed into my fence and I hadn't noticed over the last few days. 2006-7 Vauxhall Astra, judging by the foglight cover left behind, probably a drunk driver coming round the corner too fast. Uprooted my steel fencepost and buckled the steel frame of the panel, plus putting cracks in a couple of the inch-thick boards the panel's made from. Pretty certain they'll have a more expensive repair resulting from this than I do...

Senior design was awesome but a shitload of work. Heat transfer sucked, but so did our teacher that changed nothing from what he taught in the 70's. I remember taking 5 engineering classes (no elective bullshit easy classes) on my last semester and I was still able to work part time. Can't say I recommend it, though.

That sucks dude. Try to contact someone above whoever you talked to at the police station. We had an issue with some neighbors riding dirt bikes around our neighborhood and the standard police wouldn't do anything or cite laws that didn't exist. Eventually we got a hold of the police chief who then sent out a specialist in dealing with the problem and sorted it very cleanly and instantly. It took a few weeks to get to that point of course, but in the end the system did work out in our favor.

If you havent confronted him/her already you probably should, lie and tell them the police are investigating or something, any kind of bullshit story you can think that will scare them off. And then work with mall security to try and get them trespassed from the mall, that way if they show up the police can arrest them.
