50 shades of grey was originally a twilight fanfiction with the same title as the he-man show.

A bunch of cloistered monks identify an orbiting spacecraft and realize the secret nuclear cache from past civilization is their target, so they must go on a great circle Mad Max voyage to the monk Entmoot before going into space where a series of Gravity-like disasters occur, and all the monks have shapeshifting globe tools and controllable ropes could totally be a non boring movie, just skip the theory bits.

It's amazing how for a fanfic full of horny people, most of the dialogue is describing the outfits. Back to movie news, the California Film Commission announced that Marvel's Captain Marvel and Roland Emmerich's Midway will be fully filmed in California and thus will receive massive tax credits. This joins the Bumblebee movie which probably received the biggest Californian tax credit this year at $22 million (for comparison the movie's budget is $70 million).

Appropriate bumblebee is finally getting his own movie. When I was a kid you could go to the movies for a nickel, and nickels had pictures of bumblebees on em.

Also his thoughts on Ladyhawke and The Alan Parsons Project makes me legit question if he actually even knows what half the stuff he references is about. I will never read Ready Player One, but the basic (basic) concept is actually solid. Every single thing points to the characters using their postmodern detachment as a shield to protect them from the reality of their situation. Like, for example, when the characters see a reference to Monty Python And The Holy Grail, they say "I get that reference!" - but they don't get that they actually are in a feudal hellscape where they worship a dead CEO as an (anti)christ figure. A quick glance at the full list of references reveals an ideological uniformity identical to that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Libertarian ghostbusters, liberal star trekkers, and feudal knights unite against a vaguely-defined totalitarianism. "The red star symbolizes any collectivist mentality." - that's the reference Cline makes to Rush's 2112 dystopian concept album, which was made in tribute to Ayn Rand. Do you remember Rush? Lol? Take comfort in the fact that the characters are going to burn to death.

At the end of the Ready Player One book, the main character, because he won the challenge, is given the equivalent of a big red button that if pushed would delete the entire virtual world forever. Crossing my fingers that Spielberg ends the movie with him pushing the button.

There is some post-80s stuff in the book. I'm pretty sure Harry Potter and LOTR get a few mentions, and the main character flies around in the ship from Firefly. Funnily enough he also mentions there being additional Indiana Jones movies after Crystal Skull, but only the six Star Warses. Reading the RP1 wiki page just now, apparently Cline based the African-American lesbian character on Harry Knowles, which is just hilariously ridiculous.

Actually, when I meant "modern", I meant within the 20XX timeline of the book/film. Like, what are people forty years after the events of the film obsessing over, like Cline obsessing over '80s pop culture? Of course, that would be hilarious self-aware and we know that he isn't.

I dunno, seems like a weird thing to hate on. You could point at the teenification of adulthood as a reason people dont, like, talk about scotch or cigars or whatever weird smoking jacket conception of adulthood was before, but its also a byproduct of being in a culture where the vast majority of entertainment is readily available for consumption.

Though I've seen married dudes do it.
