I'm....still not convinced Vital Signs actually gets the Byrd rule and, separately, the filibuster. That's impressive, given that it is easily possible to see that it takes 60 loving votes to bring something new through the senate and the party that literally burned effigies of Obama were by their own admission (and proudly so) in lockstep against him since 2010 . All of this is veritable in the public record. I do agree Obama could have thumped the bully pulpit against the GOP fucks doing lovely things for obviously lovely reaaons, but I do realize now that, were Obama not such a 100% class act gentleman and largely above the partisan game, the momentum to blindly repeal the ACA would have probably been enough totip the 50+1 vote Byrd threshold start and people would start dying needlessly next year. e - please, please tell me I get to explain why two digit numbers starting with 4 or 5 are less than 60 Potato Salad has issued a correction as of 12:42 on Aug 8, 2017 |

VitalSigns posted:No, what keeps the Republicans from passing their worst ideas is they don't have 51 votes for them. Killing medicaid failed 43-57 with 9 Republicans against lol. Again, one reason they couldn't tailor a bill that would pass with 50 votes is the constraints of the budget reconciliation rules. We were saved in the end by John McCain of all people. Also, there are plenty of bad republican ideas. In 2005, George W Bush was pushing hard for a plan to convert social security into a privatized investment account. They had 55 republican Senate seats. Democrats filibustered the gently caress out of that until they gave up. This poo poo was 3 years before the financial meltdown and would've hosed ppl really badly.

I mean, if you want to run around hollering and screaming that Obama and other Dems should have beaten the GOP to the Calvinball punch, sure. Fine. Go for it; I don't actually know who you are and thus cannot call bullshit on whether you had the foresight in 2010 to predict that the GOP would go to the present degree in discarding all decorum, all standing procedural precedent. I think everyone who watched GWB and how the party lined up to justify and normalize his poo poo could have predicted we'd see this going in this direction, but if you have been surprised even once since the golden escalator, you forfeit the ability to sit on a high horse here.
